GM To Invest C$280M At Oshawa Plant To Build Next-Gen HD Pickups

GM just announced that it was investing C$280 million (roughly US$209 million at current exchange rates, 6/6/2023) into the GM Oshawa Assembly plant in Ontario, Canada. The investment will support production of The General’s next-generation internal-combustion engines for use in future full-size truck models. The latest investment follows over $1.2 billion invested into the GM Oshawa Assembly plant in 2020.
GM did not provide specifics with regard to product details or timing as related to its future truck models.
“Oshawa Assembly plays a critical role in meeting customer demand for GM’s popular full-size trucks, helping GM lead the Canadian industry in heavy-duty truck sales in 2022 and take an early lead in total truck sales for 2023,” said President and Managing Director of GM Canada, Marissa West. “Today, we are proud to say we will continue to build pickups with Oshawa pride for years to come.”
The GM Oshawa Assembly plant reopened in 2021 following extensive retooling, making for one of the fastest plant launches in GM history. Since the plant was reopened, GM Canada says that it has created 2,600 new manufacturing jobs, as well as thousands of indirect jobs at various Canadian suppliers. Production has increased to three shifts, while half of the new production hires at the Oshawa plant are women.
“What this investment will do is significant for workers and families across Oshawa and the Durham region,” said Unifor National President, Lana Payne. “By building the next generation of truck products thousands of jobs and the plant’s footprint will be secured for years to come. Continuing to invest in Oshawa autoworkers makes sense now and in the future.”
The announcement of the new C$280 million Oshawa investment follows an announcement made yesterday that GM will invest more than US$1 billion into its Flint Assembly and Flint Metal Center manufacturing sites in support of The General’s next-gen, ICE-powered, heavy-duty trucks.

I’m going to get major backlash but since the article brings it up, is being a male in the workplace, especially at companies like gm, a bad thing now? Female Barra, female Canadian president, female UAW president and “half of new hires are women.”
It’s not a bad thing, but auto manufacturing historically has been a VERY male dominated career field. Oshawa when it closed in 2018 was over 85% male. So it’s worth pointing out that GM is drawing more women into the field.
I hear your concerns for men in an industry that historically was male dominated.
But things are changing, more than half of population are women, women are making a larger share of the automotive purchases than in the past and in trucks as well.
All of these factors , plus having diversity of people will also help make better decisions inside the business as the decisions will have imput from a greater cross section of the populations, and not just the male perspective.
This will be healthy for the company and for the male population as it will force them to be more competitive, and to be the best John Doe they can be!!

I am so, so happy to hear talk about putting $money into ICE autos, for the past few years all we heard is about the $BILLIONS, and BILLIONS going toward to electric. A little common sense is coming back.
The influx of women in the work place, has been growing for decades. My wife worked for GM Rochester till her passing. In this day and age, two incomes have become the norm. Cost of living is going through the roof. The only negitive I will say is, many of the workers at GM are UNSKILLED workers making SKILLED worker wages. Thw two tier system was a start, but not the answer. They still need to weed out the people who are there just for the pay. My wife worked with many who just got bye with the bare minimum input each day. I know its hard to believe, but it happens very shift, at very plant. Count on it.
Isn’t that why EVERYBODY goes to work? To get paid? So they can pay their bills? And what precisely do you believe is considered a SKILLED worker wage in this new day age of avarice?
Glad to see this investment in future ICE trucks, but wish it was a domestic plant.

Oshawa is the overflow flex plant. The domestic truck plants can’t keep up with demand.
The women hiring quota in Oshawa is to appease the current Canadian federal government idiots. Just about all federal money up here now comes with various levels of “woke” conditions attached. If GM got the cash and all they have to do is hire 50% women….they negotiated extremely well.
So hiring your wife is being “woke” and is a bad thing? And because of this you’ll hate on any company who believes in equality for all? I just can’t comprehend such mindset.
Everyone is focused on the wrong thing. I don’t care if it’s women or men building the trucks. I care that the logistics in Canada suck. It is currently taking longer to get aSilverado built in Canada delivered to the dealer than it does a Trax built in Korea. This is horrific and we all cringe when a truck is built and it says pending dispatch in Oshawa.
Thank you for bring this up! I dont care how much they are putting into this plant if they cant get us the product in the US. I have a sold order sitting there since Sept 2022. Same customer ordered a 2024 in March 2023 that was built in Flint and it is in rought. Its just unreal. Lets focus on the issues now please.
The problem is with the transport carriers themselves. Not with GM. There is not enough available and GM cannot just utilize every carrier for their own use.
I understand that. For $200 million it bet they could come up with an idea!
