GM Hit With Two Airbag Inflator Lawsuits In Canada

Just last month, GM released a recall in Canada due to an issue with the driver-front airbag inflator. Now, two airbag-related lawsuits have been filed against the Detroit-based automaker.

Slater Vecchio LLC and Consumer Law Group have both filed a class action lawsuit against The General over defective airbags. More specifically, both Canadian-based law firms allege that airbag inflators designed and manufactured by ARC Automotive contain a flawed component that has the potential to propel shrapnel and debris through the cabin of affected vehicles.

These two GM lawsuits affect vehicles like this 2017 Chevy Traverse.

The following two tables contain a list of affected vehicles listed in each lawsuit:

Upon concluding a 2023 investigation into affected vehicles, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTAS) released a statement requesting that ARC Automotive issue a recall for the faulty airbags.

“NHTSA is issuing this recall request letter to notify you that the Agency has tentatively concluded that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists in the frontal driver and passenger air bag inflators under investigation that were produced before installation of borescopes on all toroidal inflator manufacturing lines in January 2018 (“subject inflators”), and to demand that ARC issue a Part 573 Recall Report addressing that safety defect,” an NHTSA spokesperson was quoted as saying.

It’s worth noting that ARC Automotive, along with a few other automakers, have refused to issue a recall. However, General Motors has announced several recalls for the same airbag defect in the U.S., which includes vehicles like the Chevy Traverse, GMC Acadia, and Buick Enclave.

The NHTSA is not fighting the number one safety issue in all of America. The big trucks and busses keep using re-cap tires that shread all over America highways causing a thousand times more injuries and accidents than a damn air bag inflator. We all run into these flying debrie from these tires. We have to swirl at 70 MPH to keep from running over a recap tire in the middle of the highway. Motorcyclists have these tire parts coming back at them on the highways. NHTSA can find a garbage dumpster and jump into it. NHSTA fight the #1 safety hazards on America roads, “RECAP TIRES PLEASE!!!!”
