The GM Authority Take
Despite the six percent drop in Chevy Equinox sales during Q1 2023, the compact CUV placed fourth in its highly crowded and competitive space. Even better, combining the Equinox with the GMC Terrain gives GM a third-place showing against perennial favorites.
We posit that Equinox sales were in the red during the quarter as a result of inventory and availability issues caused by difficulties in the logistics and distribution chains.
It’s worth noting that the Equinox is the Bow Tie brand’s second best-selling model behind the Chevy Silverado. The ‘Nox is also GM’s third best-selling model overall during Q1 2023. Furthermore, the Chevy Equinox was the most leased vehicle in the U.S. in Q3 2022.
About Chevy Equinox
The 2023 Chevy Equinox ushers in a few noteworthy updates and changes over the refreshed 2022 Chevy Equinox, the most notable of which is a new engine, with the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine replacing the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX. Also, the 2023 Equinox gets a new e-boost braking system. Additionally, the Sport Edition and Midnight Edition packages make a comeback for the 2023 model year.
In December the 2023 Chevy Equinox received a “recommended” rating by Consumer Reports. However, IIHS gives the Chevy Equinox a “poor” rating in its updated moderate overlap front test for model years 2021 through 2023.
Regarding the future of the popular compact crossover, GM President Mark Reuss confirmed that the next-generation Chevy Equinox will arrive in 2024, during a presentation given at last fall’s GM Investors Day event.
“This is the big redo of our popular ICE Equinox that we have today, in the biggest segment of the world,” Reuss said. “This is right in the heart of the market and, again, this is a major redo for us here, so we’re very excited.” Reuss also stated the next-gen Equinox would be “high-volume” and “much more profitable than the old one,” also adding that the next-gen would be a “second lap” for the underlying D2 architecture.
Our spies first spotted the 2025 Chevy Equinox prototype testing last November and again in December, and most recently in March. Also, GM authority has learned that next-gen Equinox will also get an Activ trim level like the one offered on the current generation Chevy Trailblazer and upcoming 2024 Chevy Trax. Earlier this month, images of the next-gen Equinox leaked online, revealing a more rugged exterior design over the current model.
As we await the next-gen model, the 2024 Chevy Equinox is expected to largely be a carryover from the 2023 model year.
While the current, internal-combustion-engined Equinox will continue being offered well into the future, including the next-gen model, GM CEO Mary Barra debuted the first-ever 2024 Chevy Equinox EV on CBS Mornings after the automaker initially teased the all-electric compact crossover a year ago. The 2024 Chevy Equinox EV will feature as standard a single Ultium Drive electric motor powering the front wheels, rated at 210 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque. An optional ‘eAWD’ system will also be offered, rated at 290 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque. In February the 2024 Chevy Equinox EV began road testing.
While we wait Chevy to launch the Equinox EV, we expect the next-gen Equinox with an internal combustion engine will only boost sales of GM’s best-selling non-truck offering.

You can’t deliver something sitting at a rail head. Logistics is one big cluster. Instead of whining about rail cars, Mary should be dispatching carriers. She can’t deliver what’s off the train. The worst management in the history of GM.
Really, so a third party causing the problems of not only GM but the entire industry, and it is her fault? Have you paid any attention to what or how GM is doing or are you just upset it’s a Mary and not a Michael running the biggest car company in the world and excelling? During her time she came out in a much better position than the others, but yeah, she is the worst… Haha!
Nox is somewhat popular. Next generation looks bigger, like Traverse, but it’s an Arcadia like illusion. Nice to see Mazda doing well in a segment. Ford is missing out on a really important segment. Jeep, too! Seems like Jeep fell apart right after Stellantis merger
Mary took away the larger engine and put in a snowmobile transmission, no thanks.
Um, do you even know what transmission is in there? Hint, it isn’t what is in a snowmobile…
Disgustingly annoying. First we have the so-called “chip shortage” and now rail issues. Makes you wonder if this too is a hoax and if destination charges will go up thousands as a result (they’re already outrageous).
So, former $8-10K Equinox discounts are now $3-4K (in my area) due to low supply.
If the auto industry isn’t at the top of the “most despised” list, it should be.
That’s a lot of fleet sales for Rogue or lots of Big Altima Energy buying the Rogue lol
