Cadillac Escalade IQ Gets Celestiq-Inspired, 8-Lug Wheels

Per GM’s ambitions to launch 30 new all-electric models globally by 2025, the iconic Cadillac Escalade SUV is getting EV’d via the upcoming Cadillac Escalade IQ. Critically, the new Escalade IQ was recently spotted testing as a camo-clad prototype, and despite the covers, there are several interesting styling features to dissect. These include the wheels, which incorporate an eight-lug configuration and a design inspired by those of the Cadillac Celestiq.

A comparison between wheels on the Cadillac Escalade IQ with wheels on the Cadillac Celestiq.

Looking at the rollers on the Escalade IQ prototype alongside the wheels on the Cadillac Celestiq, a number of similarities jump out. For starters, there are several parallels in the design and layout, with both wheels incorporating wide spokes offset with thin inner spokes, creating a sort of pinwheel effect. While the Cadillac Celestiq runs 23-inch wheels, this Cadillac Escalade IQ prototype is riding on 24-inchers. The Escalade IQ will also run 275/50R24 tires, the same size rubber as the Chevy Silverado EV RST and GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition.

Notably, the internal-combustion-powered Cadillac Escalade will also offer up a set of 24-inch wheels per the SUV’s forthcoming refresh. However, unlike the eight-lug configuration of the Cadillac Celestiq and Cadillac Escalade IQ, the wheels under the ICE-powered Escalade refresh will incorporate a six-lug layout.

It’s also worth noting that the Chevy Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and GMC Hummer EV all use eight-lug wheels. Each of these models (as well as the Cadillac Escalade IQ) ride on the EV-dedicated GM BT1 platform to boot.

Looking ahead, GM is expected to launch an extended-length Escalade IQL variant for the all-electric SUV following the launch of the standard-length model. This echoes comments made by GM President Mark Reuss last year when he said that the size differences and wheelbase differences present in GM’s full-size SUVs will be done “again in a much more innovative way” with regard to GM’s upcoming, full-sized, all-electric utility vehicles.

Finally, GM Authority was the first to report that the Cadillac Escalade IQ is targeted to offer 400 miles of range.

  1. Because of extreme low profile tires, lateral forces put more stress on the lugs, not the tire. The heavy battery packs add a huge amount of weight. Proof that 24″ wheels are not needed and serve no purpose. I’m tired looking at vehicles brake disc and calipers on many vehicles. 20″ is my maximum size and anything larger, I’m walking. Bigger is not always better.

  2. 8-lug wheels are needed for two reasons: excessive vehicle weight and or torque. I’m this case both likely apply. PS I don’t like the 24” wheels, they make it look like a gangster cruiser.

  3. Does anyone notice that this model does not have side railings on top of the roof? Obviously, it is the same model posted on several stories on this site but this model could be the sportier version of the Escalade someone suggested in the comments section from another story. AKA – Range Rover Sport.

  4. Celestiq inspired 8-lug wheels or Pontiac inspired? If I remember correctly Pontiac was using 8-lug wheels back in the early to mid 1960s.
