2024 Lexus GX Three-Row SUV Debuts As Indirect Cadillac XT6 Rival

Japanese luxury based Lexus has officially revealed the next-generation 2024 Lexus GX. Currently scheduled to be released for the 2024 calendar year, the 2024 GX will serve as an indirect competitor to the 2024 Cadillac XT6.

Sharing its architecture with the larger Lexus LX, this body-on-frame luxury SUV is available with a single powertrain combination. The GX 550 includes a twin-turbocharged 3.4L V6 gasoline engine, rated at 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, and a 10-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, 4WD is the only available drivetrain configuration.

Designed with a rugged look in mind, the 2024 Lexus GX features a wide track and a reduced front overhang that enhance its off-roading capabilities. When compared to the previous-gen model, the new GX boasts larger dimensions all around. Meanwhile, the trim lineup consists of Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, and all-new for Lexus, Overtrail and Overtrail+ variants that add two-tone bodywork, black fender flares, a skid plate and 18-inch wheels wrapped in 33-inch all-terrain tires.

On the interior, the cockpit is completely overhauled, featuring a lower and more horizontal instrument panel design that allows for a simplified look and passenger experience. Allowing for improved front and side visibility, the all-new dashboard is complemented by an available Head-Up Display system, along with the standard 14-inch Multimedia Touchscreen Display. Furthermore, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are equipped as standard fare, as is a digital 12.3-inch driver instrument cluster.

The 2024 Lexus GX is no slouch in regard to active safety goodies either. The luxury SUV features Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Road Sign Assist and Proactive Driving Assist.

“For more than two decades, the GX has bridged the gap between legendary off-road capability and luxurious everyday driving,” Lexus Vice President and General Manager Dejuan Ross was quoted as saying. “The GX is a critical piece in the evolution of the Next Chapter for Lexus, and with new powertrains, an impressive host of premium features, and the all-new Overtrail grade, the 2024 GX has something for everyone.”

As mentioned above, General Motors currently doesn’t offer a direct competitor to the Lexus GX, as the three-row Cadillac XT6 is a unibody crossover. In fact, the only luxury-brand body-on-frame SUV The General offers is the full-size Cadillac Escalade, which directly compete with the Lexus LX.

In any case, the 2024 Cadillac XT6 is the next-gen 2024 Lexus GX 550’s closest competitor. Notably, GM will not be introducing significant updates for the upcoming model year of the luxury crossover, which hasn’t been updated since it debuted for the 2020 model year.

As a reminder, the 2024 XT6 is available with two powertrain options, including the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LSY gasoline engine, rated at 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGX gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque.

Regardless of engine choice, every XT6 unit is equipped with the GM nine-speed automatic transmission as standard, while FWD is standard and AWD is optional.

Under the body panels, the XT6 rides on the GM C1 platform, while production for the North American market takes place at the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee.

  3. Other than both having three rows, the XT6 is no direct or indirect competitor for the BOF, very off-road capable GX. The cross shopping will be minimal at best.

On the other hand, the just announced Lexus TX will compete directly with the XT6 as mentioned in another story.

    1. This seems like more of a Tahoe “ZR2” / “AT4X” – if it existed.

Wondered why it wasn’t labeled as Toyota, but it’s probably trying to compete with the Defender.

  6. So V6 is replacing V8 and another model with V8 engine is biting the dust. This will leave only 3 Lexus models with an V8 while Toyota make already has 0. These moves will help in reducing oil consumption and pollution.
