As previously reported by GM Authority back in February 2023, production of the off-road-focused 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X was originally scheduled to kick off in April 2023. Unfortunately, this production start date never came to fruition, and was delayed. Now, GM Authority has learned that production of the Canyon AT4X is officially under way.
Sources close to the matter tell GM Authority that production of the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X officially commenced as of mid-May 2023. Notably, this production delay also affected the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2.
As a reminder, the Canyon AT4X ups the ante for Big Red’s midsize pickup, and takes its all-terrain prowess to the next level with the introduction of a bevy of off-roading goodies. These features include a factory lift, ultra-wide front and rear tire tracks, 33-inch tires, underbody skid plates, Multimatic DSSV shocks, front and rear e-lockers, and a Baja drive mode.
Further upgrades can be found in the interior, where the AT4X sports a two-tone red and black leather upholstery, an 11.3-inch infotainment system touchscreen, head-up display, and a seven-speaker Bose audio system.
For the most hardcore enthusiast, General Motors also offers the limited-run Canyon AT4X Edition 1 model. This exclusive package includes the likes of front- and rear-facing underbody cameras with a wash function, 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, an off-road front bumper, winch, grille-mounted 30-inch off-road light bar, and front skid plate.
In regard to the powertrain department, the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X features the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine. Only available in the High-Output tune, this powerplant develops 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. All 2023 Canyon models are equipped with the revised GM eight-speed automatic transmission.
Under the skin, the all-new Canyon rides on an updated variant of the GMT 31XX platform, which it shares with the 2023 Chevy Colorado. Production takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

Hey GM, wouldn’t it make more sense to start a project and complete it rather than not being able to produce vehicles that people have ordered four or five months ago and now you’re going to start another version of it without taking care of your existing customers my gosh, we as consumers are fools we should stop buying from these companies and hold their feet to the fire for customer service. I mean it’s not like we’re not paying for it. Look at the price of these vehicles anyhow for those of you that have orders in and see this and are frustrated. I can only feel your pain Good luck to ordering this new vehicle. You won’t see that for another 6 to 8 months yikes.
You do realize production and transportation are two different things right? They can produce vehicles while they catch up on transportation. But no, you think it is a good idea for them to idle a plant while still having the same transportaton and staffing issues so those hourly folks can’t work or get paid? That won’t do anything for the logistics issues, just cause more problems with shortages when they get caught up. Stop blaming GM, this is an industry wide issue, and they aren’t going to stop producing vehicles and be caught with their pants down if logistics suddenly gets a surge and caught up.
Some people just don’t have a clue. That hourly kid putting door panels on isn’t going to be allocated to driving a truck to bring you your vehicle all of a sudden, it doesn’t work like that…
No this GM issue running boards shouldn’t be offered if they can’t supply them for example . Ford will sit truck before they send out unfinished order . Heated steering wheel that cost extra that you get 6months later that you still have to pay for . If you can’t supply it when it’s sold . Cusomter should get rebate of some sort, free oil change etc somthing . Ridiculous asking them pay full price on incomplete truck . What’s next Steelies while their wheels they ordered is still being waited on?
There he is calm and senseless you still don’t get the point I will try to drive this one more time into your skull. If you read the comments from people here you will find they are extremely frustrated because they do not have their vehicle and now let this sink in communication yes, the fact is is these customers are paying for a product and the company could care less to try to help them out and give them communication so that they understand what’s going on instead we have you being an apologist for GM. Nobody wants to hear that again if the company cannot produce the vehicles to their customers, then they need to shut down production until they can and stop taking orders and promising things to customers that they cannot produce. What’s so hard about that. I hope you can understand that and get it through your head.
Been waiting for my DENALI since March 3 No updates IN TRANSIT VERY SAD GM
Ordered my AT4 in mid-December, got notified that it was built on February 6th and have not heard anything since. It does not even show up as “In Transit”. Dealer can only determine that it is on quality hold. I hope the customers that order the AT4X have a better experience.
Same experience here waiting for Denali produced week of 2/17. No updates. Still waiting. Thought GM was better than this.
Just to sit out in the elements just begging to get damaged.
They had several thousand Canyon/Colorados get damaged due to a hail storm we had here about a month ago.
I’ve in contact with my dealership since September 2022 about ordering an AT4X the books still aren’t open on that specific model
I’ve actually tried a couple other GMC dealerships in the area and they can’t put in an order for one either. Thank god I’m in no rush, haha!!!
As a GM retiree and an 11-year Colorado owner, I was very excited about the new models and ordered a Canyon Denali over two months ago. I was somewhat understanding of new model production delays and was willing to ride it out, even if it meant starting over when the 2024s came out. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the greed and attitude of local dealers. Unwilling to give our employee discounts and tacking on a $2,990 “fair market value” charge to everyone just lost them a customer to Jeep. The new trucks are nice, but for me, not nearly $60,000 nice..
A little late to start production on the ‘23 model as most manufacturers are starting ‘24 production.
The 2023 Colorado production was extended till like October
This whole situation is just Nuckin’ Futs!
How many parts will need be retro fitted later under or over 5?
GM is late getting to market, period.
They can produce a vehicle, but not deliver it even with a destination charge of $1,495!
Someone at GM should be ashamed of themselves.
Incomplete vehicles and shortages doesn’t say much for their supply chain management.
As prices increase the efficiency of GM decreases.
If you have a vehicle ordered as I do, the timing of the 2024 vehicles being on the horizon, makes me question buying a vehicle a year old and paying the sticker price!
I live 5 hours away from factory
Pickup an option
I can’t even get a email about my Denali
So this has come anonymously form a plant worker! I hope this helps better understand what they are dealing with.
Hey Mike, I work at the Wentzville assembly plant i thought it would be much help to share some insight with you about why production is going so horrible. Last year we were behind on production due to shortages, and this caused us to build later into the time frame the plant was supposed to be under construction for the 23 model trucks. Gm hired a company to do the construction work, and they were not too happy that GM didn’t shut the plant down in time. The company decided to take there time so they dragged on for weeks that lead into months to the point we had to come back early while the plant still was under construction. This made Mary the CEO very mad that the company had not yet completed the work, and that the launch is going horrible. During a new launch it’s not unusual for GM to temporarily install the new welding robots for the new vehicle in an empty space in the factory as we’re still building the late model vehicles. So when they closed down the factory, gutted out the old equipment, and installed the new equipment nothing was working right. The company GM hired completely screwed us over and did a horrible job, and took their sweet time to fix issues. So to pull this off Mary sent a team down from Detroit to monitor the issues, and a lot of temporary things had to be made up just to start production. When we did come back we started having part shortages, and quality issues with the fenders that lasted a month. We only started building the work trucks and trail bosses first, which is why you see a bunch of them more then other trims. They also are the ones to first get their EPA certification, The plant did wait a long time on the EPA certifications. So as we waited we still continued to build and later started production on LT and elevation trim levels, We also had built a bunch of cars that sat to wait for shipment that later would be damaged by a hail storm. So fast forwarding today we are at full production, kinks have been fixed along with majority of quality issues, shipment issues are improving. So the problem is now we have so many cars in the overflow lot waiting to be inspected, reworked, and shiped. We only have 4 inspection bays at the plant that do the system checks alignment and so forth, so all of this is slowing production down as we have to throttle back due to overload. Gm has started to combat this by adding more work days, adding more employees to double up jobs, a temporary tent to be able to do more rework jobs and quality checks, and over time for employees. Certain times production is stopped shortly to handle the trucks in the overflow lots, then production resumes again as it gets crazy when you start pulling cars from the overflow lots and cars coming off the line. I hope this helps anyone waiting on their truck it’s definitely affecting us employees also, and everyone at the plant wants to build a good quality truck. I know some won’t understand but at least would get a better idea as to what the plant has been dealing with. Everyone at the plant are really working hard to catch up with orders.
All reactions:
Thank you, Rob. I too am frustrated as I wait for my ZR2, but this helps to ease the anticipation. I think GM made a poor choice by being silent about the issues. Not knowing why there are delays have only increased tension with their customers. Of course there will always be haters, but many of us would probably be understanding.
The dealerships I’ve checked with are still saying they cannot order the AT4X trim level. I live right down highway 70 from Wentzville plant. I’ve been in contact with a salesman since last September about buying one. I’m now concerned there will be quality issues since the plant is being pressed to get 23’s out when the 24’s are right around the corner. Does anyone have insight on whether or not an order can be placed for customers.
I have requested an order through my dealership but it hasn’t been accepted, canyon AT4x. Been waiting for 2 months now. Any communication about a timeline would be helpful.
Good luck
Ordered my DENALI MARCH 3
No Info at all
Just IN TRANSIT
FROM WHERE
Ordered my AT4X May 17. Haven’t heard anything yet?
I have Denali produced in March also. Also no info. Just in transit. Dealer has another Denali produced at same time that shows in transit and listed with hail damage. I believe a lot damaged in hail storm.
So do we get a repaired truck or a new one
I saw something about retro fitting for som of the hail damaged ones ??
And why no communications to my dealer I work there
I agree they have there work cutout trying to satisfy all the demand they won’t stop for 5 years just to get all the lots and orders filled.
