Back in September 2022, GM Authority reported start of regular production (SORP) for the off-road-ready 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 was set for April 10th, 2023. However, in May, GM Authority learned ZR2 production had been delayed and would start in mid-May instead.
Sources close to the matter have now confirmed to GM Authority that the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 did indeed begin to roll off the assembly line in mid-May 2023. The 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X was also subject to the same production delay.
Production of all 4WD 2023 Chevy Colorado models was slower than expected in May 2023. Dealerships said this resulted from problems with parts supply causing a 10 percent constraint, meaning production was 10 percent lower than originally planned by The General.
The 2023 Chevy Colorado debuts the all-new third generation of the familiar pickup nameplate. GM gave the truck a complete overhaul that includes new exterior styling, a fully renovated interior space, and a new powertrain in three different tunes depending on trim level.
The General has equipped the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 to fill the role of the “Desert Runner” for the Colorado lineup, riding on 17-inch Aluminum wheels wrapped in 33-inch OD MT tires. In addition to sporting the updated 2023 Chevy Colorado exterior, the ZR2 also features a unique MIC Black grille and Flowtie badge.
The new Colorado ZR2 also includes Black finish for the sideview mirrors, hood applique, window surrounds, rear bumper, and grille bar. The tailgate houses the new StowFlex storage system to increase available storage compartments within the vehicle.
As the off-roading variant of the all-new model year, the Colorado ZR2 includes cross-country features like Multimatic DSSV dampers, ZR2-specific chassis upgrades, and aluminum skid plates. The truck offers an approach angle of 38.3 degrees, a departure angle of 25.1 degrees, a break-over angle of 24.6 degrees, and 10.7 inches of ground clearance, the most ground clearance of the 2023 Colorado lineup.
Buyers can also choose to upgrade their truck’s trail-conquering capabilities with the available special-edition Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss package. This package adds 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, a new off-road bumper and front fascia, a roof-mounted light bar, and an underbody camera system with up to 10 camera views, including a segment-first underbody camera, plus unique decals and emblems.
For motivation, the third-gen Chevy Colorado ZR2 is powered by the High Output calibration of the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. Four-wheel drive is also standard, and the performance-tuned engine comes paired with the updated GM 8-speed automatic transmission.
Under the body panels, the Colorado ZR2 rides on an updated version of the GM 31XX platform like all other 2023 Chevy Colorado trims, while production takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.
