As GM Authority covered back in March 2023, the 2024 GMC Sierra HD lineup was unable to be ordered with every LPO, or dealer-installed, accessory assist step option. Then, in April 2023, three assist steps were made available, while four remained unable to be ordered. Now, GM Authority has learned that two more LPO assist step options are available once again.
The newly available accessory assist step options include (relevant RPO code in parenthesis):
- Off-Road High Clearance Steps, LPO (VXW)
- Black four-inch round tubular assist steps, LPO (RVS)
For further context, the VXW steps are normally optional on the AT4 trim level for an extra $1,390, and are not offered on any other trim. Meanwhile, the RVS option is normally optional exclusively for the Pro trim level for an extra $850.
It’s worth noting that the following accessory assist step options are still unavailable (relevant RPO code in parenthesis):
- Four-inch round chromed assist steps, LPO (VXJ)
- Black work step, LPO (VQO)
Speaking of accessibility, these options have varied availability across the Sierra HD trim lineup:

Additionally, every factory-installed assist step option has remained available to order (relevant RPO code in parenthesis):
- Six-inch rectangular chrome assist steps (BVQ)
- Power-retractable Black assist steps with bright trim and LED lighting (BRS)
- Power-retractable Black assist steps with LED lighting (B3L)
As a reminder, the 2024 GMC Sierra HD introduced a mid-cycle refresh that features the range-topping Denali Ultimate trim level, along with revised styling, an overhauled cockpit and powertrain enhancements. An all-new 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4X is also on the way later this year.
In regard to output, the 2024 Sierra HD features the 6.6L L8T V8 gasoline engine as standard fare on most trims, while the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine is optional on most trims. The updated-for-2024 Duramax boasts 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. In the case of the Denali Ultimate, the Duramax is equipped as standard.
No matter engine option, every GMC Sierra HD model is equipped with the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission as standard, which replaces the GM six-speed previously found in gasoline-powered configurations.
Under the skin, the Sierra HD rides on a more capable variant of the GM T1 platform, while production takes place at the GM Flint plant in Michigan.

Still don’t understand why you can’t order a gas engine in the Denali Ultimate while you can in the regular Denali. No one can give a good reason.
