Thousands Of 2023 Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, GM Vans Damaged By Hail

The 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GM Canyon made their formal introductions last summer, with both models ushering in all-new third generations for their respective nameplates. As GM Authority has covered in the past, there are currently a large number of units of 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon pickups stored at and around the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri, the facility where the two truck models are produced. Now, GM Authority has learned that thousands of units of unshipped 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon pickups, as well as GM vans, have been damaged by hail.

The GMC Canyon is produced at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

According to GM Authority sources, the GM Wentzville plant was in the path of a significant hailstorm over the weekend, and as a result, roughly 3,300 unshipped vehicles were damaged. The unshipped vehicles that were damaged include units of the 2023 Chevy Colorado, 2023 GMC Canyon, and GM vans (Chevy Express, GMC Savana), all of which are produced at the Wentzville facility.

The damaged vehicles, and in particular the 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon pickups, were not all parked at the Wentzville plant. Rather, some of the damaged vehicles were parked at nearby lots which GM is using as storage areas, including a nearby quarry. Some of the vehicles are waiting for retrofits and / or quality control, as GM Authority has covered previously.

Most importantly, the hail damage will result in yet further delays with regard to shipping and customer deliveries for these vehicles.

Late last month, GM Authority took an exclusive look at what’s going on with 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon deliveries. Per the exclusive, GM Authority has been inundated by hundreds of queries from readers asking for an update on their new pickup, with some claiming to have been waiting weeks, sometimes months to take delivery. In a statement emailed to GM Authority, the Director of Chevy Truck Communications, Shad Balch, said that “Production of GM’s midsize pickup trucks is well underway and we are shipping to dealers every day. During launch, it is a common practice for us to temporarily build and hold vehicles to ensure quality before shipping to dealers.”

  1. GM has no one to blame but itself! Get the damn vehicles ready to ship and move them out! Now you will be stuck giving major discounts on those damaged vehicles just to move them! Sadly some were customers trucks/vans that were sold and promised! Now those customers have to wait again or cancel and switch to another brand that can provide. I got burned on a Savanah van back in 2015 when I ordered a 2016
They jerked me around so long I had to settle for a used 2015! I’m still pissed about the way I was treated! Never again GM! Never again!😡😡😡

    1. Weather damage isn’t uncommon for OEM assembly holding lots. It happened to thousands of GM full size SUV’s in Arlington last year. Stuff happens

    2. All brands have had that problem. Manufacturers build more than they can ship so they all have them waiting and problems can happen. Not just a GM problem and not a reason I would go buy another product. Luck of the draw that but is a very small issue (you are talking about decimals of a percent of vehicles across the industry that have this happen, so just bad luck). They are trying to get them out but there are other issues. Waiting on a part, waiting on a QC inspection, waiting on shipping or staffing, it isn’t GM just holding to piss off a few vocal people, they want them out but can’t for reasons mostly out of their control. They are catching up though, tons have been hitting the lots and driveways lately…

      2. The fact that “weather happens” is not the problem. IT IS THE FACT THAT THE CUSTOMER ISNOT TOLD WHAT IS GOING ON!!

      3. Hey Shad,
If all brands have these problems then why do we ONLY hear about it affecting GM customers?
I guess they are the biggest complainers?

    3. The problem isn’t GM. The problem is that, until the rise of the digital age – where we now have access to information like never before – we were ignorant of post-production processes. Doubtful that the manufacturers are doing anything different than they’ve ever done them. What has changed is the consumers. We have become much more demanding, because we have just enough access to information to make us so.

  2. Lovely, just freaking Lovely…. GM should of shipped the trucks out long time ago and now they have to pay to have them repaired and inspected… By the time the 2023 Colorados hit the dealerships and finally get to their owners such as myself, the 2024 will be out…

    1. They can’t just ship them out. They have to pass a federal emission inspection before they can be shipped, now why that’s not happening idk

You would think that previously made trucks would be a much higher priority when shipping than a newer made truck. Guy complained he ordered one in March & hasn’t got it yet – wa-wa-wa

    3. Did you read where they “build and hold them to ensure quality before shipping them to dealers”
Hmmm, wonder if that means they are trickling out a few to unsuspecting beta testers/Guinea Pigs to see how they perform and need to be recalled?
      “Hold them to ensure quality”?
      Wonder how that works?

      Reply
      1. Here is how it works…
UAW cats build a poor quality truck, then GM holds them until an inspection can identify all of the assembly issues. Then it gets in a long line to be fixed before they can ship it.

        Reply
        1. Isn’t that all vehicle brands….. They all built poor quality trucks, cars, vans, etc… and it costs them $ to build and it costs us $$$$$ to buy.

  3. Why are all these vehicles sitting and not being delivered? This year will be half over before anybody can even see a new Colorado or Canyon. Get your act together GM. My wife bought a Grand Cherokee last year and I really like it. Ya never know I might not buy GM next time around.

    Reply
    1. It isn’t “their act”, it is the others. Transportation, EPA, staffing and so one. Plus some builds are constrained, so they build them, and finish it later when the part comes in, much better and more effiecient than waiting and putting it in the back of the que to go through build. They took a chance and some got damaged, many can get PDR’d most likely, so not a huge deal.

Go buy that GC, see how that works out for you with the reliability of those things. I like them, but all the issues from reading and people I know who have them, hard pass on a Fiat product.

  5. By the time they get those 2023 out Ford and Toyota will be taking orders and shipping out 2024 with more options. I really believe gm dropped the ball on the Colorado/Canyon. They raised the price by 25% and gave less. Still no rear power glass and then take away knob for headlights. Cheap plastic everywhere in cab, and less leg room. They took away a full cluster and put in a small screen that doesn’t fill spot unless you pay even more for the 2 way over priced Denali or at4x. I’m debating on cancelling my order, but will wait to see it in person before signing. Gives me a chance to wait and go check out the Ford ranger. And might take heat being a GM/union worker…might have to go with a Toyota Tacoma based on what I’ve seen so far. Oh well it’s my money and I’ll get what’s built and looks better.

    Reply
    1. 5% on the ZR2 and less on the WT, I fixed that for you. No where near the 25% you outrageously stated.

They gave more everywhere (they didn’t take away the power slider it was never available), headlight knob is weird but I never touch mine, so not a big deal to make two clicks in a screen to do it, most people never touch it from auto. They added a ton more stuff people were whining about and barely raised prices for getting a truck with more options, tons more power (you can get V6 HP with more than diesel torque). Reviews show they far from dropped the ball, they actually picked it up and alley opp’d it for a finger roll. Nice try though.

          1. Lol, check the prices again. Plus I was adding taxes and that to prices. Do some research folks. Ill be surprised if the cab isn’t same as last model with different interior and exterior pieces. I know for sure the back glass is the same and the rear half cab is with just different seat stitching with a added center head rest. But I’m not trying change anyone’s mind on what they want, I’m just going where I want my money to go. And with what’s going on since the release date on this trucks…it’s making my my decision easy to make.

I suspect GM will be all right, but it is a delay in getting the trucks to customers.

Now Corolla with 50 million units later, Toyota is laughing at American automakers while American automakers give retirement incentives to their ranks.

    1. As Bob O. points out the article states that the storm occurred the previous weekend. If that is the case, I doubt that your damage could have been fixed that quickly and delivered to your dealer. The hail damage issue has been discussed on this forum for the past three weeks. Things just are not adding up but if we speculate that GM is still withholding information the apologists will break into their diatribe.

  24. I believe that the hall damage is true and that there were issues with EPA fuel economy ratings holding things up at the beginning, but they are also voluntarily holding vehicles that are ready to ship in order create a scarcity so that demand stays high and dealers don’t need to discount prices to move vehicles. I read an article about it recently and it sounds like GM and several other manufacturers are doing this. There have been all these predictions of auto prices falling because of supply finally increasing, high interest rates, and economic uncertainty. The manufacturers are getting out ahead of this by limiting the supply shipped to dealers.

I found it the day after delivery after my detail guy pointed it out after putting a ceramic coat on the truck. The dealership and General Motors were great about handling it. They got a third-party painless dent removal pro to do a flawless job on it. I’m sure GM wants to do the right thing here so even if it’s missed, they will take responsibility for it.

The invoice has my vehicles Vin number and a detailed description of the work performed. This was not disclosed at time of sale and the salesman is making up lies about the invoice. What are my options? I want to stay with Chevy, but feel they need to discount my teuck or upgrade me to a higher trim.

    1. Most states have a dammage disclosure law and if the repairs were over 3% of the selling price of the truck they were required by law to disclose that to you. If your truck was 40k, then 3% would be 1200 dollars and so a 2k repair would fall under that law. Web search dammage disclosure law in the state you bought the vehicle and then notify the dealer if they are in violation of that law and what you want the remedy to be. If you are not satisfied, then contact your state’s attorneys general and they will help you with a buy back if you do not want to keep the vehicle. My hail dammage was repaired after delivery and it looks flawless and I am happy.
