The NASCAR Chevy teams were blisteringly fast during qualifying for the Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway on May 13th, 2023. In fact, half of the top 10 starting positions belong to the Bow Tie, though the Chevys did miss out on the front row.
The No. 47 Camaro ZL1 of 2023 Daytona 500 champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will lead the NASCAR Chevy train from third place, having posted a time of 29.141 seconds at 168.752 mph around the 1.366-mile asphalt oval. He’ll start next to the No. 24 Camaro of William Byron, whose speed of 168.342 mph earned him a 29.212-second lap.
Starting fifth will be the No. 1 Camaro of Ross Chastain, who was involved in a postrace altercation with fellow NASCAR Chevy driver Noah Gragson of the No. 42 Camaro last weekend at Kansas Speedway. (For reference, Gragson’s No. 42 Camaro will start 29th.)
Daniel Suarez, driver of the No. 99 Camaro, laid down the sixth-fastest time, and will start beside the No. 5 Camaro of Kyle Larson, who will take the green flag from seventh.
By comparison, Martin Truex Jr. earned the pole position in the No. 19 Toyota TRD Camry, thanks to a lap at 169.409 mph and 29.028 seconds. Bubba Wallace’s No. 23 Camry will start in second, with a 29.04-second lap at 169.339 mph.
Two Toyotas – the No. 45 Camry of Tyler Reddick and the No. 54 Camry of Ty Gibbs – failed pre-qualifying inspection twice, and have each lost a crewmember and pit stall selection as a result. NASCAR did not disclose the infractions that it found on these race cars.
The Cup Series race at Darlington will commence at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 14th, 2023.
