Following the official reveal of the all-new 2023 Baojun Yep EV in early February, SAIC-GM-Wuling has just announced that Baojun‘s zero-emission mini crossover will debut a new tailgate concept.
General Motors’ second joint venture in China unveiled new official images of the all-new 2023 Baojun Yep EV, revealing that in addition to being the first zero-emission kei car utility vehicle in the entire global auto industry, the all-electric crossover will debut an innovative tailgate concept inspired by smartwatch design. In fact, SGMW calls the new tailgate “Car-Watch.”
The Baojun Yep EV’s new Car-Watch tailgate concept represents an unprecedented idea in the automotive industry, integrated into the module that sits right between the taillamps. It’s made up of a customizable horizontal band that simulates a wristwatch strap and a square frame with a digital color screen, with a format quite similar to that of an Apple Watch.
In particular, the Car-Watch “strap” on the all-new Baojun Yep EV measures 1,050 mm or 41.3 inches in length and 260 mm or 10.2 inches wide, while the screen measures 300 mm or 11.8 inches in length and 256 mm or 10 inches wide. The module will be equipped as standard on uplevel Baojun Yep trims and will also be offered as an accessory with custom housings for entry-level variants.
SGMW claims that the Baojun Yep EV’s Car-watch tailgate concept is an ingenious tool that seeks to create a personalized and diverse social life for younger users, the vehicle’s main target audience. The Car-watch screen opens up a variety of social interaction methods as users can use text, images and videos to display creative ideas, exchange data or better human-vehicle interaction.
The all-new 2023 Baojun Yep EV is expected to be officially launched in China this coming June, when the vehicle is scheduled to arrive in the Chinese market. The joint venture has yet to reveal official images of the Baojun Yep’s interior design as well as powertrain details, which will be unveiled in the coming weeks as the launch date approaches.

Unless it can display a message such as “Get Off my A$$”, it is pointless.
I want mine to say “your right to drive an EV ends where my tailpipe begins”.
It’s a distraction to other vehicles behind it. Never would pass NHTSA tests.
Not in the USA according to current NHTSA standards. Which limit the colors allowed on rear lights of any legally registered vehicles to red, white and amber…each for specific purposes.
Over regulation in America didn’t reduce annual traffic fatalities since the 1950s.
Reminds me of the Suzuki Samyaride (bad spelling) that had a tendency to flip over in tight turns.
Except the whole “Suzuki Samurai rolls easily” thing was a bunch of baloney. The US government studies had found the Samurai’s real-world rollover behavior was “within a range with other utility vehicles.”
That thing looks like a Pokémon Bronco
