Despite GM offering the GMC brand in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, the current-generation Canyon is only sold in the U.S. and Canada, but not in Mexico. However, GM will introduce the all-new 2023 GMC Canyon in Mexico for the first time ever.

Here is the 2021 GMC Canyon in the Denali trim. The all-new, next-generation of the premium midsize pickup truck arrives for the 2023 model year.

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Canyon sales during the first quarter of 2023 kept the midsize pickup last in its segment when ranked by sales volume. The Toyota Tacoma remained at the top of the segment, posting a sales bump of less than one percent. In fact, the Toyota was the only model in the green this quarter. The 53,583 deliveries of Toyota’s perennial bestseller accounted for nearly half of all segment sales. The Nissan Frontier took second place with a 24 percent slide to 16,926 units, followed by the Jeep Gladiator in third with a similar 24 percent slip to 13,575 units. The Chevy Colorado (see running Chevy Colorado sales), the Canyon’s corporate cousin, placed fourth with a 39 percent drop to 13,256 units. The Ford Ranger (see running Ford Ranger sales) took fifth with a 35 percent decline to 11,500 units. The GMC Canyon placed last with a 19 percent slide to 5,016 units.

On a segment share basis, the Canyon maintained a four percent share. The Tacoma led with a dominant 47 percent segment share, up a healthy nine percentage points year-over-year. The Frontier posted a 15 percent share, down one percentage point, while the Gladiator held a 13 percent share, down one percentage point. Sales of GM’s two midsize pickups, the GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado, combined for 18,272 deliveries and a cumulative 16 percent segment share to place The General in second in the segment. Even so, The General still moved less than half the units of the Tacoma. Additionally, the Colorado outsold the Canyon nearly three-to-one this time around.

The midsize mainstream pickup truck segment contracted 18 percent to 113,856 units in Q1 2023, meaning Canyon sales nearly mirrored the segment average.

Below, we provide Honda Ridgeline sales for informational purposes, as the model straddles the midsize and full-size pickup truck segments, placing it above the Ranger and Canyon in terms of sales this quarter.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Canyon sales remained at the bottom of the segment, as has been the case since its introduction for the 2015 model year. The performance is completely normal during a generational changeover, and we expect Canyon sales to rebound as the all-new 2023 Canyon begins arriving on dealer lots in greater qantities.

First-ever 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X with Edition 1 package

About GMC Canyon

GM’s answer to the Tacoma’s dominance starts in part with the all-new, third-generation 2023 GMC Canyon, headlined by a longer wheelbase, new exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, a new powertrain, a suite of new technologies, and the introduction of the first-ever 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X as the range-topping go-anywhere off-road variant. The new truck is available in four trim levels: the mass-market Elevation, AT4 off-roader, Denali luxury cruiser, and the aforementioned AT4X, which offers an exclusive Edition 1 package. All trims feature a factory two-inch suspension lift, enabling ground clearance of up to 9.6 inches, as well as a dedicated off-road performance display page in the infotainment system.

Under the hood, the 2023 GMC Canyon is equipped with just one powertrain offering, but a powerful one at that. The turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine comes standard across the line in the High Output tune rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to an updated version of the GM eight-speed automatic that addresses many of the transmission’s shortcomings.

Inside, we find an overhauled cabin with soft-touch materials and stitching all around, save for the Elevation, which features hard knee rests. The all-new interior comes with a new standard eight-inch digital instrument cluster for Elevation and AT4 trims, and an 11-inch digital instrument cluster for Denali and AT4X trim. An 11.3-inch infotainment display is standard across the lineup, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, plus Google Built-in (Google Automotive Services), an available head-up display, and wireless phone charger.

A 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition is the way and will include a number of important upgrades over the standard, new 2023 Canyon AT4X.

The 2023 Canyon also gets a new StowFlex tailgate like the Colorado, plus new wheel designs up to 22 inches, and keeps the Denali Black Edition package.

Ford just answered in kind by announcing the all-new 2024 Ford Ranger as a Colorado and Canyon rival. The next-generation Ranger features new styling, new tech, and the Ford Ranger Raptor – a high-performance off-road variant – a first for the U.S. market. The new styling starts with unique front-end treatments depending on the selected trim level, as well Ford’s C-clamp signature headlights. While the Ranger continues to outsell the Canyon, it remains only one rung up from the bottom in the segment.

Toyota is not sitting still, having recently revealed the all-new Tacoma with overhauled exterior, an all-new interior, new powertrains and new trim levels.

All-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma

The 2023 Chevy Canyon is now finally shipping after some delays. With production ramping up and availability improving – along with a push from an aggressive promotional campaign – we expect more buyers to take a look at GM’s all-new premium midsize pickup truck for the first time and consider it over the Tacoma. As noted previously, The General’s one-two punch in the midsize truck segment will continue, with the Canyon being joined by the next-gen 2023 Chevy Colorado as a more mainstream, affordable offering. Together, GM’s new midsize pickups are set to shake things up, and we expect sales to follow, just as long as GM can produce enough units to meet demand and get the trucks to customers.

We took a drive in the 2023 GMC Canyon Elevation and came away impressed with the entry level offering from Big Red, finding the all-new truck being a huge improvement over the outgoing model. It looks awesome, drives incredibly well, and presents a very capable and attractive package. Take a ride with us in the video below.

  1. Try giving some model choices, like a 6 ft bed and the 3.6 liter engine or maybe a new diesel along with the 10 speed transmission. I’am sure sales would jump then.

    1. I agree. Offer an extended cab with a 6ft bed. Not everyone wants or needs four doors.

      1. How about just getting some inventory out West!!!
There may be ONE on the lot at the closest dealer near me… and that’s several cities away!

  2. Maybe if they lowered their price.

    1. There are pleeeenty of videos on Youtube showing the problem: outrageous dealer markups. The average price of a Canyon in my state is $45-50K and they are NOT Denali trim level. Why would anyone with a sane mind pay that much for a mid size truck. The GM dealers think these are freaking Range Rovers. I don’t see them lowering their price any time soon.

  3. Well yeah, can’t find them and constraints as well. What do ya expect.

  5. 16 mpg. What a joke. A 4 cylinder. GM has mental issues and I am done with what they think I should want.

  6. I don’t know much about them but from what I’ve heard they are hard to find, not enough body or power train choices, and too expensive. Dealerships are poisoning GM’s customers. Let people order and pay online and pick them up at the dealer. Dealer markups should be controlled by GM. However, ultimately it is GM’s fault, if they could produce enough of them to meet demand then the market would fix the markup problem naturally. I am ready to purchase a new GM vehicle anytime but I refuse to pay the markup, I have three good vehicles now so I can wait.

    1. The 5.3 was great through 2006. I’m not sure why they had to screw it up.

  12. They had issues getting them out to start so this makes sense.
