GM has issued a service bulletin instructing its dealers to replace the electronic control unit of inoperative power-retractable tonneau covers (RPO code 5KM) on certain units of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup and 2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup.
This action will make the inoperative power tonneau covers functional. The tonneau covers are currently inoperative because the installation took place without successful installation of a working electronic control unit (ECU).
The power-retractable tonneau cover is an optional dealer-installed or LPO accessory available only on certain model year and trim combinations of the Hummer EV Pickup. The tonneau cover is available on the following models:
- 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1
- 2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1
- 2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup 3X
The power-retractable tonneau cover is also bundled together with numerous other accessories in two different options packages for the 2023 model year of the Hummer EV Pickup. These include the 3X Launch Package (RPO code PCU) and the Edition 1 Accessory Package (RPO code PDP).
GM estimates a total of 724 GMC Hummer EV Pickup units are affected by the non-function power-retractable tonneau cover electronic control units have been installed.
The General advises dealerships to order a new electronic control unit only when a replacement is needed, and not for shelf stock at the dealership because of the small number of pickups affected. Dealers are to inspect vehicles in inventory as well as all potentially affected GMC Hummer EV Pickup trucks brought by customers to the dealership for other reasons, such as service.
The GM Global Warranty Management system can be used to verify a specific GMC Hummer EV Pickup unit’s involvement through the Investigate Vehicle History screen. Affected Hummer EV Pickups are marked “Open” on this screen. Qualified service personnel can also check for the presence of an inoperative power-retractable tonneau cover through an approximate 20-minute inspection.
If an inoperative power-retractable tonneau cover is present, dealership service personnel should replace the electronic control unit. This process requires approximately 30 minutes of labor. The replacement is available only during the Hummer EV Pickup truck’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty period.
Further information may be available to Hummer EV owners who call GMC customer service and reference the service update number:
- Service Update Number: N232401090
- GMC Customer Service Telephone: 1-800-462-8782
Replacement of the inoperative power-retractable tonneau cover electronic control unit can only be carried by GM EV certified dealers with appropriately trained service personnel. In Canada, only dealerships signatory to the GMC Electric Models Agreement and possessing the correct equipment and training can provide the service.
As a reminder, 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup production began in late 2021 at the GM Factory Zero plant, previously the GM Detroit-Hamtramck plant in Michigan. Power is provided by GM Ultium batteries and GM Ultium Drive motors, with the Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 model developing 1,000 horsepower and roughly 1,200 pound-feet of torque.
Under the body panels, the GMC Hummer EV Pickup rides on GM’s dedicated “body-on-battery” or “Ulti-body” electric BT1 platform. The upcoming Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV are built atop a different version of the same architecture.
