GM Top Manufacturer For Automotive Loyalty In 2022

GM won the “Overall Loyalty to Manufacturer” award in S&P Global Mobility’s 27th annual Automotive Loyalty Awards, according to a press release from the automotive data analysis firm. The award was based on buying data from January through December 2022.

GM made “strong loyalty gains” through all of 2022 according to S&P Global Mobility, with vigorous demand for its pickup trucks and SUVs as the driving force of its success.

The research firm noted the past three years have been tough ones for automakers trying to keep customer loyalty, with levels declining steadily over that timeframe. GM bucked this trend despite the fact “retaining loyal customers has been more challenging than ever before.”

GM vehicles won model loyalty awards for five segments in addition to the Overall Loyalty to Manufacturer award for the whole company.

Repeat winners in their divisions included the Chevy Bolt (S&P did not clarify if this referred to the Chevy Bolt EV, the Chevy Bolt EUV, or both) and Chevy Corvette.

GM CEO Mary Barra posted a response to the award on her LinkedIn account. She stated that GM is “delivering industry-leading quality and earning customers for life” and that the award results from “smart investments, strong execution and great teamwork.” She also said GM’s combination of strong core products and expanding electric vehicle offerings “amazes our existing and new customers.”

The award continues a trend of GM customers being among the most loyal in the U.S. automotive market. The General also took the top ranking in the annual Automotive Loyalty Awards back in February 2022. The research firm remarked, “GM retained 64 percent of its customers due to continued strong demand for their utility and pickup lineup.”

The repeated awards highlight GM’s ability to retain high customer loyalty over time. Last year was the seventh consecutive year GM took top place in the Automotive Loyalty Awards. It was also the 18th occasion GM was the leading automaker for loyalty in the previous 26 years.

  1. “delivering industry-leading quality and earning customers for life”
Mary Barra is a special kind of delusional.

    1. It is literally her responding to GM winning an overall loyalty award. What is she supposed to do? Say it’s a lie and reject the award?

      Be reasonable.

  2. I bought my car new from a GM dealership, and I have had a really good experience. As for customer loyalty, there is a 99.99% chance my next car will be a GM product. GM makes the best cars in their price range in terms of performance, and quality is as good as it gets at that price range compared to others.

The things people criticize GM of doing (such as the push for electrification or being more “politically correct”), everyone is doing that. We can’t just be blaming GM or Mary Bara, everyone is just adapting with the times.

But as a customer looking to spend my money, I believe I am getting the most out of my dollar with GM.

    1. Weird. Toyota isn’t doing that. Neither is Ford. Even Jim Farley has publicly said that ICE isn’t going away.

      Reply
      1. ICE isn’t leaving GM either as they develop a new engine. GM’s EV talk is all part of a rebrand kn an effort to pick up coastal drivers.
Barra knows ICE will be part of product mic for a long time and especially LATAM. Major cities have no charging plans in place which is essential to non truck sales

      2. Toyota and Ford both are showing full electric vehicles regularly, so yes they are. It is moving that direction so they have to be prepared, it will take a while so ICE will be around but it is going there and all manufacturers are doing it…

  3. After 50+ years of loyalty, don’t expect me to remain loyal after the ICE Camaro disappears…….AGAIN! More than once, the cars I liked and would have bought were canceled.

    1. Btw idk if you missed it, but there was an article from a month ago saying that GM is already working on the 7th gen Camaro.

I don’t know any details right now, but I’m going to throw a wild guess out there that it’s going to be built on the Alpha2 platform like the Cadillac CT4 and it’s going to have the classic 6.2L V8 or a turbo 4. And if that’s the case, that’s exactly what I want. The Alpha chassis is what makes the Camaro special, it is the best RWD front engine chassis ever made.

      1. Zero chance of that happening…
Zero… GM has made some great Pony-cars over the years and I have owned several but they have NEVER figured out how to market or update them to keep them relevant.
“IF” there is a 7th Gen it will be an EV.
GM has made that clear many many times…

  4. Not for long if they can’t figure out how to get vehicles on the lots! GM needs new leadership.

    Reply
    1. That is a tough problem; can’t build them fast enough or demonstrating corporate restraint to raising the price to tamp demand .

      Reply
    2. It has zero to do with leadership, they are running a strong ship compared to the competitors. GM isn’t the one dropping the ball. They don’t control the transportation, chip or staffing industries. They want the vehicles on the lots and in the hands as that is when they get paid. Look at any brands lots, none of them have a solid supply (Nissan, Toyota, Ford, Dodge, etc). So don’t put this on them…

      1. Agreed. GM is doing perfectly fine, what you need a new leader for?

I swear 90% of people are puppets just echoing and repeating other peoples opinions without any personal reason.

Can I get in on that?

    3. Carl you do realize that every dealership is having supply issues right? This isn’t a Mary Barra problem, this is a 2023 problem, you donut.

      Reply
      1. She’s in charge it’s her responsibility. If you agree there’s not enough supply, why is GM slowing production of Silverados? It’s unbelievable that they can’t spray coat bed liners, find another supplier tomorrow! Issue a request for proposal with the already known specs and see what happens. If your current supplier fails, you fire them! Once that’s known problems get solved. Run the dam company! This is hardball not patty cake.

        1. Hey Carl, if you’re so capable why don’t you apply for the CEO position. Just run the damn company right? Should be easy for you.

          Reply
        2. So what’s your education background Carl? Do you have business degrees? Do you have engineering degrees? Because Mary Barra does, and she is well qualified for the job. If your credentials are so much better, you should seriously consider putting your resume in with a cover letter to GM and ask them to replace Mary Barra with you…. Lol

          Reply
          1. Yes, both a mechanical engineering degree and a masters in business management and 43 years of experience working.

            1. Wow, you have very good credentials. You should consider applying for her position.

If you think you can do better than her, I’ll support you. Because I think Mary Barra is doing an excellent job already. So with you in there as CEO, GM’s profits will double from what they are now?

              Reply
            2. If you can double GM’s profits as CEO, I bet every share holder on earth will support you.

      2. No even close to the truth…
GM is the ONLY car company still playing these games with their customers…
They could easily get product deliveries done…
They are simply too incompetent to get it done.

  5. Very surprising stat and hard to believe. When you look at supply and delivery dates. Also the removal of Camaro . GM has always killed a
Car once they got it right
I’ve been a GM buyer since 1970 The variety and quality have diminished. You used to be able to go to a GM dealer and find what ever your needs or desires were. Today it’s give us the$$$ and maybe we w give you a truck or suv That is if your willing to wait a year or more and take what we want to sell you not
    What you really want.

  6. It will be very interesting to see in three-four years if the loyalty reward will still go to GM. The push towards electrification, the stagnation of the Buick line, with consumers aware that the Buicks are imported from China and South Korea, the cancellation of the Camaro, the reduction in cylinders and overall horsepower in the NON truck lines, 3 cyl engines, 4 cylinder ICE in Cadillacs, and very few sedans, coupes, and convertibles. Mary can take a bow now, but what kept a lot of loyalty to the General Motors Corporation (past Company) is eroding quickly.

    Reply
    1. Yeah everything you said is the complete opposite of what is actually going on. You are cherry picking what you want to see and trying to blast it out there. Buick, sales have been strong in the US and followed everyone with the drops during the 08 crash and 20 pandemic, otherwise they are selling just as well and are climbing again. No one knows or cares where their car is made outside of a few star spangled yelling people. They just won an award for loyalty yet you say it is eroding? Profits are up, sales are strong and they are in a great financial place compared to many of the competitors, so Mary can take a bow and take her seat at the thrown for while to come.

      1. You say “don’t blame GM for not delivering products” then you say sales are up?
        Which is it?
        Can’t be both…

    2. GM is doing perfectly fine. Mary Barra is doing a great job. Everything is fine, relax.

      1) 7th gen Camaro is coming, it’s not cancelled or going BEV yet.
      2) everything is made in China now, your iPhone and MacBook included. China manufacturing has good quality products, the problems come from bad design. If Apple can have high quality products made in China, I don’t see why GM can’t.
      3) most of us don’t care if the Chevy Trax or Buick Regal has low horsepower. Every time someone else buys a high MPG low performance economy car from GM, these people’s money is what allows us to have things like Corvettes and Camaros. Sports cars don’t make any money, they are like passion projects. Economy cars is what pays for sports car development.

      1. China manufacturing is good?
        Lol
Are you sitting in Beijing right now writing that?

        1. Apple products are the highest quality tech products on the market. People are paying $1000+ for their phones and $2000+ for their laptops. People line up outside of Apple stores for their products. Guess what? All Apple products are made in China.

I would rather have these products made in North America because it goes back to the economy I live in. But then I also like low prices. You can’t have both. If everything we bought was made in the USA everything we buy would be minimum double the price you pay now if not more.

  7. What’s interesting about this is that while GM customers are loyal, GM has no idea who their loyal customers are and does not acknowledge them or reward them in any way.

  8. For some posters, GM can’t do anything right as long as the CEO is a woman. For the rest of us, facts and data trump opinion.

In Every other market they dabble in outside of the low-volume Vette they struggle.
If you are in the Market to buy a Truck then your local GM dealership can help you.
Absolutely NOTHING else is ever available or desirable…

  10. There are so many sheep in the comments. In 2023 people forgot how to think for themselves.

People just latch on to popular opinion. Oh if Johnny, Bobby and Sally says Trump is bad he must be bad. Why do you hate him? Idk because he’s bad. Oh if Johnny, Bobby and Sally says Mary Barra is bad she must be bad. Why do you hate her? Idk because she’s bad. If Johnny, Bobby and Sally says V6 Camaros are for teenage girls I’m going to go buy a BRZ that’s even slower. Why do you hate V6 Camaros? Idk because it ain’t a V8 (while driving a BRZ).
