GM Partner Nel Planning Electrolyser Factory In Michigan

As reported by GM Authority back in November 2022, General Motors teamed up with Nel Hydrogen U.S., a subsidiary of Nel ASA, to explore the efficacy of hydrogen fuel. Now, Nel ASA has announced plans to build a new gigafactory in Michigan.

This new Michigan-based factory will produce hydrogen electrolyzers, which play a crucial role in the production of green hydrogen. In fact, these electrolyzers will be used in various applications, including fuel cell vehicles, energy storage systems, and industrial processes. Once completed, the facility will be capable of producing more than 150,000 units per year, and is expected to create more than 800 new jobs in the area.

“The choice of Michigan is based on an overall assessment of what the state can offer in terms of financial incentives, access to a highly skilled workforce, and cooperation with universities, research institutions, and strategic partners,” Nel CEO HÃ¥kon Volldal was quoted as saying. “I will also highlight the personal engagement from Governor Whitmer and her competent and service-minded team.”

As a quick refresher, GM and Nel ASA signed a joint development agreement to develop cost-effective hydrogen production methods. This collaboration aims to bring green hydrogen production to the masses, with the ultimate goal of reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability. As a matter of fact, The General has plans to eliminate tailpipe emissions from its light-duty vehicles by 2035, with full carbon neutrality to follow in 2040.

“Having Nel’s new facility close to our home base of Hydrotec development, in southeastern Michigan, will help us more quickly accelerate our electrolyzer collaboration,” Hydrotec executive director Charlie Freese was quoted as saying. “This technology is critical in helping bring down costs, while also creating a more sustainable hydrogen supply.”
