For informational and comparative purposes, we also provide sales figures for crossover models that overlap with large three-row crossovers like the Traverse – either in price or seating capacity. These crossovers, which are generally smaller than the Traverse, are often cross-shopped with larger models like the Traverse, and include:
- Midsize crossovers that offer three rows of seating, such as the GMC Acadia, Kia Sorento, and Mitsubishi Outlander.
- Midsize crossovers with two rows of seating sold at a similar price point to the Traverse, including Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, GM’s own Chevy Blazer, and Hyundai Santa Fe.
- Midsize and full-size crossover models that are sold under the same name, but whose sales are not broken out by their respective automaker, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Specifically, Jeep parent company, Stellantis, does not individually report sales figures of the two-row Grand Cherokee vs. that of the three-row Grand Cherokee L.

The GM Authority Take
Chevy Traverse sales continued to recover from inventory constraints during the first quarter of 2023, placing third among several competitors, though availability of units at dealerships still remains tight.
Traverse new-vehicle inventory was running at 19 days supply in April, 21 days in March, 17 days in February, and 16 days in January. As a reminder, a 60-day supply is considered optimal in the U.S. auto industry by many automotive sales organizations such as the National Automotive Dealers Association (NADA). For reference, a 60-day inventory level means that dealerships have enough inventory on hand to sustain sales volume for roughly the next 60 days.
About Chevy Traverse
The 2023 Chevy Traverse arrives largely unchanged from the refreshed 2022 Chevy Traverse.
The 2020 Chevy Traverse was listed as one of the best certified pre-owned three-row crossovers by Kelley Blue Book. Additionally, Consumer Reports hailed the 2022 Chevy Traverse as the easiest model to drive in the midsize three-row utility segment.
In January Consumer Reports gave the 2023 Chevy Traverse a “recommended” rating.
Meanwhile, the next-generation Chevy Traverse is scheduled to be revealed later on in 2023.
During a presentation at last fall’s GM Investor Day event, GM President Mark Reuss said the upcoming third generation of the full-size crossover is scheduled to launch during the 2023 calendar year, meaning it should arrive as a 2024 model.
“A nice enhancement for this; obviously a very popular three-row vehicle, high-volume, right in the heart of the market, right below the [Chevy] Tahoe in terms of size,” he said, “but very much more truck-like as we introduce the refresh of that.”
The next-gen, 2024 Chevy Traverse prototype was spied out in the wild, and up close and personal, showing the overall shape being boxier and more upright than the current second-gen model, among other visual clues. Recently GM Authority has learned that the 2024 Traverse will offer a new off-road-oriented Z71 variant, rather than the addition of an Activ trim level as originally anticipated. Also, the 2024 Traverse will drop the High Country and RS trim levels.
With the Traverse continuing to be recognized for its value, getting inventory supply levels restored is key to GM’s mainstream, three-row full-size crossover taking on competitors for even better sales performance numbers. That will be even more critical when the next-gen model arrives later this year.

Adding the GMC Acadia makes sense, but I would also add the Buick Enclave (8803) and Cadillac XT6 (4762) since they are on the same platform giving GM 61,043 Q1 sales.
Why are people still buying highlanders? They by far are the worst vehicle in this segment from a drivability and comfort standpoint.
Because the hybrid gets 35 MPG. People don’t stop and think about how much gas they could buy with the $5K markup Toyota dealers are asking.
It seems you can always play with the numbers to get your desired result. With that said, The Kia/Hyundai novelty is wearing off as some dealers are asking as much as $10k over MSRP for a smaller SUV than the Traverse.
We looked at them all and to my surprise my wife liked the Traverse best, by a lot. I’m not a Chevy fan, and the interior is outdated, but it is nonetheless the roomiest and nicest driving in class. A very comfortable family hauler. Throw in a $5K off MSRP offer from the dealer and we couldn’t say no. She loves it so far.
I have a 2013 Traverse LS, with 133K on it, and it is the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. I’ve had to replace the flex pipe and a motor mount. Other than routine maintenance and a deer that I hit ($7K in damage), that’s it. It has been a fantastic vehicle. Would definitely buy one again.
