GM has issued a product recall for certain units of the Chevy Spark and Chevy Spark EV due to an issue related to the hood striker, which may prematurely corrode at the pivot.
The problem: affected vehicles may be equipped with a hood striker (secondary hood latch lever) that may prematurely corrode at the pivot.
The hazards: if the hood striker or secondary latch is severely corroded, it may get stuck out of position and fail to engage. In the event that the striker is stuck out of position, and the primary and secondary hood latches fail, it’s possible that the vehicles hood may open unexpectedly while driving, which could increase the risk of a crash.
The fix: in order to fix this issue, General Motors is instructing GM technicians to replace the hood striker assembly and hood latch assembly. These repairs should be performed free of charge for the vehicle owner.
Affected components: secondary hood latch lever, hood latch assembly.
Affected vehicles: 2013 through 2015 Chevy Spark, 2014 through 2015 Chevy Spark EV.
Number of affected vehicles: it’s unknown exactly how many vehicles are affected by this recall.
Owners should: GM will notify owners of affected vehicles via mail, instructing owners to make an appointment with their local Chevy dealer to address this issue.
