Any time a police officer initiates a vehicle stop, their life is in potential risk due to other vehicles driving by. Unfortunately, one officer was recently reminded just how dangerous this situation can be, having been struck by a Chevy Camaro while performing a routine vehicle stop.
According to a report from Patch, a state trooper had pulled over a Ford pickup truck traveling east on I66 in Fairfax County, Virginia for a speeding violation on Monday May 15th, 2023. The stop took place at the 50 mile-marker.
Moments later, a woman from Bristow, Virginia crashed her yellow Chevy Camaro into the rear of the trooper’s Ford Explorer. The impact was so violent that the police vehicle struck the trooper, who was walking back to his patrol vehicle, launching him into the right eastbound lane, before the Explorer smashed into the rear of the Ford pickup truck it had pulled over.
Thankfully, the officer was able to regain his bearings quickly enough to remove himself from harm’s way and out of oncoming traffic. Both the trooper and driver of the Camaro were treated and subsequently released from Fairfax Inova Hospital with minimal injuries.
It’s worth noting that the state police vehicle was stopped on the right shoulder of I66 and had its emergency lights flashing when it was struck by the Chevy Camaro.
This should go without saying, but we’ll say it anyway: GM Authority would like to remind our readers to pay attention on the road and abide by all traffic laws. Although the cause of this accident wasn’t released, we urge you to put your phones down and focus on the road ahead, as the potential consequences just aren’t worth the risk.

And they live among us and breed.
Thanks for a well-written article pointing out the constant hazards facing law enforcement officers.
This is a good reminder that a few moments of inattention, for ANY reason, can lead to disaster. And it applies to every one of us.
My bet is that the Camaro driver was passing on the shoulder.
What kind of penalties did the Camaro driver receive? Loss of licence? Geez!
BACK THE BLUE. Love law enforcement and FIRST RESPONDERS.
That’s why the CHP used to only turn on their 4-way flasher’s when they pulled someone over at night. Particularly when impaired, many people get extreme fixation and drive right into the brightest thing in front of them. Old divebombers and fighter pilots used to call it target fixation and if you weren’t aware and didn’t work to avoid it, it could easily make you drive right into the ground.
