Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Silverado sales during the first quarter of 2023 put the Bow Tie brand’s full-size truck line in second place in its segment. The Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-series sales) remained at the top with a 21 percent jump in sales to 170,377 units, while the Silverado followed in second place with a five percent bump to 126,992 units. The Ram Pickup took third with a 17 percent drop to 105,350 units. The GMC Sierra (see running GMC Sierra sales), the Silverado’s corporate cousin, took fourth with a 19 percent bump to 67,198 units. The Toyota Tundra followed in fifth with a 22 percent increase to 27,651 unit, and the Nissan Titan placed sixth with a 37 percent drop to 4,038 units. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup recorded two deliveries.

GMC’s Hummer EV Pickup is included here in the lineup along with the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning. However, Ford’s EV is not shown as a separate entry. In fact, the F-Series line item also includes its Super Duty line of heavy duty trucks.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Silverado sales nearly matched the segment average during Q1 2023, with GM’s best-selling vehicle combining with GMC’s offering to keep The General as the reigning king of overall full-size pickup truck sales in U.S.

We attribute the healthy performance of the Silverado during Q1 2023 to better availability of the truck line at the dealer level, enabling quick turn and higher sales volume.

About Chevy Silverado

The 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 arrives as the fourth model year of the fourth-generation nameplate, introducing a few changes and updates over the refreshed 2022 Silverado.

The big news for 2023 is the introduction of the even more off-road capable first-ever 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison.

For 2024, the Chevy Silverado 2.7L engine will be branded as TurboMax. Furthermore, the upcoming 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 will receive the second-generation Hydra-Matic 8L80 eight-speed automatic transmission in conjunction with that engine. Meanwhile, the 2024 Silverado High Country will be available with the Midnight Edition Package, and the 2024 Silverado ZR2 will offer the LZ0 Duramax diesel engine, joining the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine for available powerplants, which will sound meaner thanks to a new Active Exhaust system.

2024 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD ZR2 Bison

Last fall, GM unveiled the refreshed 2024 Chevy Silverado HD featuring new exterior styling, an overhauled interior space, new tech features, and upgrades to the powertrain lineup.

Recently The General debuted the first-ever 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 as the flagship off-roader for the Bow Tie brand’s heavy-duty pickup line along with the new Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 Bison, which takes the pickup to the next level of off-road capability.

Under the hood, the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD cradles the 6.6L L8T V8 gasoline engine as standard, while the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine is optional. The diesel engine also boasts an improved, SAE-certified output boost to 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. For 2024, both the diesel engine and the gasoline engine now connect to the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission as standard, which replaces the GM six-speed equipped mated to gasoline-powered models previously.

2024 Chevy Silverado HD LTZ

GM revealed the first-ever 2024 Chevy Silverado EV over a year ago, with Silverado EV in the RST and the Work Truck (WT) trims set to launch this year. Other trim levels, including the upcoming Chevy Silverado EV Trail Boss, are also planned. The Chevy Silverado EV will ride on the BT1 platform, a dedicated electric architecture that uses Ultium Battery technology.

GM competitor Stellantis has responded, recently debuting its battery electric 2025 Ram 1500 REV with a 500-mile range that bests the Chevy Silverado EV. This is the follow-on to the Ram 1500 Revolution pickup concept light-duty pickup truck presented at the beginning of the year. The new Ram will offer an optional range-extending gasoline engine in a unique hybrid setup, wherein the onboard ICE will generate electricity rather than send rotational energy to the drivetrain for “class-shattering range.”

Stellantis also claims the Ram 1500 REV boasts class-leading 14,000-pound towing capacity. However, GM announced that a max towing package for the Silverado EV WT is in the works which would allow for a 20,000-pound tow rating. Both ratings are speculative at this time.

Sales can only improve for GM’s best money-maker with Chevy’s full line of refreshed models, featuring exciting new trim levels, joined by the Bow Tie brand’s first-ever EV pickup truck later this year.

  1. They could sell more if they could get more inventory on dealer lots, other than 4 cylinders that don’t sell well.

    Reply
    1. Four cylinders are selling just fine, they put incentives on them to try and entice even more buyers who have an image complex regarding V8’s only, when in reality the four cylinder is better in most ways than the 5.3 and many to the 6.2.

      Reply
      1. The lots around here have mostly 4-cylinders on them because they don’t sell well, at least here (Midwest). I don’t know anyone who wants one.

      2. “when in reality the four cylinder is better in most ways than the 5.3 and many to the 6.2.”

We’ll check back in ~8 years and 200,00+ miles. Most of today’s 5.3s will still be running, as will the 6.2s that aren’t burning oil. Can’t say I have the same confidence in a strung-out 4cyl doing a V8’s work. “No replacement for displacement” is a fact not a complex.

      3. Hey : “Commonsense” is actually Mr. Mike – I can tell… hittin’/hatin’ on the 5.3s!
        (Cuz he misses them so)

      4. But there is no reason for their existence. The 4 cyl turbo gets 19/22…the 5.3 V8 gets 17/21. That is beyond a neglible difference. Better mpg would be the only advantage and there isn’t one.

The real winner is that turbo diesel… 24/29! I test drove it and it’s great especially now that it’s only 995 option.

  2. What’s going on with Ram? They have the highest days supply of inventory and huge discounts and still can’t seem to move them.

    1. They are Chryslers, I’d even drive a Ford before a Ram and I’d walk before driving a Ford. nuff said.

    2. I passed by a Dodt dealer in San Diego yesterday and only saw 6 Ram pickup trucks, and at least 2 were 2500/3500.

      Reply
      1. That’s anecdotal.

Ram has an over 100-day supply of 1500 models, according to their own inventory reporting. Ford and Chevy have between 90-100 days’ supply of F-150 and Silverado 1500 models, again, per their own reporting. GMC has the lowest supply of the domestic trucks, at just over 80 days.

I’d post links, but I don’t know how GMA feels about linking to what they might consider competing sites.

  3. Just a thought, total GM beats total Ford in truck sales. Yes, Ford wins by model but not by company. You can debate all day on this.

    1. If Ford can get away with adding together sales of three completely different truck lines (F150, F250/F350, F450/F550), surely there’s a way to lump Silverado and Sierra sales together!

      Reply
      1. GM does count all there pickups and trucks together

    2. Correct. GM has outsold Ford since Q1 2020. It’s Barra’s fault !

  4. Probably would have been first if they hadn’t cut production. Would had higher market share and higher profit as well.

    1. GM needs new leadership.

      1. Why? GM full size pickups have outsold Ford’s since Q1 2020.

        Reply
        1. They refuse to build enough of them, they could sell more if they were so scarce, and not 4-cylinders that don’t sell. And quit trying to shove EV’s down my throat I’m not interested!
