The GM Authority Take
The very healthy 83 percent jump in Cadillac XT4 sales during Q1 2023 continue a solid trend from last quarter. The gains come as a result of improved inventory thanks to resumed production following extended assembly downtime due to supply chain constraints. Even better, combining sales of the XT4 with the Buick Envision put GM solidly at the top of the segment this time around.
Overall, Cadillac‘s new vehicle inventory stood at just under 60 days supply in February, slightly down from just above 60 days supply in January following more than 60 days supply in December and a high of about 65 days supply in November. A 60-day supply is considered optimal in the U.S. auto industry by many automotive sales organizations such as the National Automotive Dealers Association (NADA). For reference, a 60-day inventory level means that dealerships have enough inventory on hand to sustain sales volume for roughly the next 60 days.
With a refreshed model delivering a fresh face plus massive interior and technology upgrades, we expect sales to remain on the upswing so long as supply can keep up with demand.
About Cadillac XT4
The 2023 Cadillac XT4 arrives as the fifth model year of the first-generation small luxury crossover, introducing minor changes over the 2022 Cadillac XT4. The XT4 continues offering a single engine option: the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LSY gasoline engine producing 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The boosted four continues to be mated to the GM nine-speed automatic transmission for both standard front-wheel- and optional all-wheel-drive configurations.
GM recently unveiled the fully refreshed 2024Â Cadillac XT4, debuting a new exterior design, an updated interior, and new tech features. The lineup will continue to include Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Sport trims, each offering its own unique persona and styling accents.
The changes start with a new front end plus an updated rear end, the former of which incorporates an updated grille design and new LED headlights with signature vertical lighting cues. The refresh introduces new alloy wheel designs as well, including 18-inch and 20-inch options, plus three new exterior colors.
Inside, we find an overhauled cabin headlined by a new 33-inch, 9K-resolution LED color touchscreen lifted straight from the Cadillac Lyriq. The 2024 Cadillac XT4 also offers a 13-speaker audio system from AKG, wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto capability, and a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot – making the 2024 XT4 one of the first GM vehicles to gain 5G functionality.
The 2024 Cadillac XT4 will support those new tech features via GM’s Global B electronic architecture. The Global B system, also known as Vehicle Intelligence Platform, or VIP, should theoretically support the expanded version of the GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous highway driver assist system, which the automaker appears to be testing on the XT4, despite having not yet announced it.
Customers have a few new interior color and trim choices, with brushed aluminum trim, Piano Black trim, genuine wood, and genuine carbon fiber making the materials list. Additionally, more than a dozen safety features are included as standard.
Under the hood the refreshed 2024 XT4 carries over the LSY engine, mated to GM’s nine-speed automatic transmission.

The sales of the XT5 for 2024 would surpass these figures, if the upgraded model was made available in this country.
imo i see the xt4 as second place.
Can someone seriously give me something to help me understand how/why these SUV’s sales numbers suck, and yet GM killed any sedan models that were selling much higher in numbers? I’m not being sarcastic or silly here. I really can’t figure out what’s going on. Between the XT4 and Envision, they didn’t even hit 21,000 combined. That’s terrible.
GM has a real problem that is only going to get worse. They are putting all their eggs in the SUV/CUV basket or the over 50 grand basket. GM is pushing entry level buyers, sedan buyers, real American buyers (meaning a car made and assembled in the US by a US brand) and traditional buyers out the door as fast as they can. Even an idiot can tell you to never put all your eggs in one basket. And yet GM give us the middle finger and keeps marching down the path to nowhere.
The sedan numbers are even worse. The numbers were literally posted on here. The XT4 is the 3rd best selling vehicle in the Cadillac brand after the Escalade and XT5. If you guys would buy sedans instead of crying about them online, GM wouldn’t continue to take them away.
Sorry Dave B. Not buying that line. I understand that the CT4/5 sales are not that great. Both cars are a half hearted attempt at that market and I’ve literally never seen one advertisement for either car EVER. But I was talking about sedan sales in general. They killed the Cruze, Spark, Impala, Sonic and knowing GM they will kill the Malibu soon as well while telling us that they have another new SUV to take it’s place. They killed the Verano, Regal, LaCrosse. They killed the best selling sedan’s in the Cadillac line. We’re talking cars that had better sales numbers than many of the SUV/CUV’s they are trying to push now.
So how long will GM keep pushing these slow selling boxes? Will they treat these like they have treated the sedans in the past? Don’t forget that in 2022 there were about 3 million sedan’s sold in the US alone. GM isn’t getting those sales. Ford sure-n-hell isn’t taking any. Chrysler/Dodge has done everything it can to kill off it’s 3 cars left. So if you take GM and Chrysler combined, they probably sold less than 300,000 cars/sedans last year. You know what that means? That all the other brands combined took advantage of nearly 2.7 million sales. But go ahead and defend GM in their decision to brag about selling 21,000 XT4 and Envision’s combined.
Sedans don’t generate the profit per unit that SUVs do. As simple as that.
JT: And when there’s nothing but SUV’s left and people are tired of just them being offered, then the manufacturers will need to discount them to keep them moving. Also, since sedan’s are getting fewer, the rental companies will be forced to use more SUV’s. All this will place them in the same boat that sedans got into years ago. Those higher profits you talk about will disappear and we’ll be back to where we were, but this time we’ll be stuck with nothing but generic and ugly boxes.
All the more reason to keep my two 1980’s era cars in perfect condition and running like new.
Dave Brady:
Exactly.
