C8 Corvette Convertible Owner Complains About This Design Flaw: Video

The C8 Corvette Convertible presents a striking exterior design, with sharp lines, aggressive attitude, and sexy mid-engine proportions. However, beyond the looks, there are a few things about the C8 Corvette Convertible that could be considered a bit “off.” Now, one C8 Corvette owner is demonstrating exactly that in the following brief video.

Screen shot from a viral C8 Corvette Convertible design flaw video.

Recently hitting Instagram via Corvette Club (@corvetteclub_), the video shows a C8 Corvette Convertible after it has sat out in the rain. The owner walks up to the rear of the vehicle and shows us the rear engine panel just behind the cabin, located in the valley between the two opposing “nacelles” that run from the roof down to the rear engine lid. As we can see in the video, a good amount of water has collected around between the nacelles, clearly the result of a low point in the body panels.

“If I don’t ever move my car this water gonna sit on here for days,” the owner states in the video. “That’s stupid.”

Indeed, there does appear to be quite a bit of standing water around the rear of the vehicle, which is something that is sure to annoy just about any owner. While some folks in the comments section question why the owner doesn’t simply park their C8 Corvette Convertible in a garage, it goes without saying that a covered parking spot isn’t always an option.

The video reminds us of a YouTuber in Canada that posted a video in 2020 showing water accumulating around the engine bay of the C8 Corvette after a wash, leading to a slew of comments about the new Vette’s design and how it worked in the rain. For C8 Convertible owners, the valley between the nacelles could present an issue after a wash as well.

As a reminder, the C8 Corvette Convertible Stingray draws motivation from the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT2 gasoline engine. Under the skin, the mid-engine C8 Corvettes rides on the GM Y2 platform, while production takes place at the GM Bowling Green plant in Kentucky.

  1. Serious question, who drives a Corvette in the rain? If I could afford a brand new Vette, it would never see the light of day if it was cloudy.

    1. It’s just a car? Drive it.

        1. Summer only tires are fine in rain…
          It’s SNOW they dislike.
          Hence the name “Summer Only”.
          Cheers!!

        3. You obviously have not used the computer setting that adjusts the vehicle performance in wet weather. You should try that, if you happen to own one.

It prevents you from spinning out via adjusting the speed, steering and braking quicker than you can do manually.

It was a valuable “wet-track” lesson I learned at the Spring Mountain C8 Driving Camp School in Pahrump NV.

          1. Yep. Did the Spring Mountain too and loved it! During the wet driving figure eight exercise, they initially shut off all of the “nags” so you could see what could happen sliding around the turns. When the weather mode was on, the car was solid. The instructor dared me to spin the car in this mode and as hard as I tried, it didn’t happen. At one point, I punched it and turned it extremely hard. The car would not lose control. I joked with the instructor that if I pulled that same maneuver with the nags off, we would done three 360’s before I could even think of gaining control.

          2. Agreed. The Spring Mountain School shows you how to drive a car like this in all conditions, including emergency braking.
The amount of control in Wet Weather Mode is completely unbelievable and needs to be experienced to be believed.

If it’s cloudy, then yes…. Your Vette will not see the light of day.

  2. he trying to make a problem that doesn’t exist. water sitting there won’t damage anything. not to mention it will evaporate in a day or so. if he is that bothered by some water, all he needs to do is take a rag or something and wipe the water off if he doesn’t “drive it for days”

  3. Why doesn’t he just park in the other direction so it’ll drain out?

    Reply
    1. My exact comment. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out! Tomg

    2. It’s the slope of the vehicle design not the ground he is parked on. I guess you want him to go find a steep hill to park on?

      Reply
      1. I assume that water is not leaking inside the car.
Look at the picture and you will see that his driveway is sloped downward. If it really worries him all he has to do is park so the car is tilted uphill.

        Reply
      2. Correct, the angle of the rear is the culprit and not the angle of the parking location.

  4. One blissful run down the highway should do it.

  5. As long as it does not get in the interior he is fine.

Engine compartments are not sealed units and often have waypter runnings or draining.

Now the Fiero did have an issue as the water would run down the front of the engine in a V6 and would rust the plugs in if not changed regularly.

Then the decal removed the rubber strip that helped and made it worse.

I have seen a number of owner break off rusted plugs.

  6. Makes it tough to wash even if kept in garage or carport if you have one. Don’t let it freeze, either. Might get caught in a storm someday regardless of where you park.

  7. It’s too bad nobody makes anything that you could make slipcover the car with. I bet that idea would make money.

  8. It appears to be a design error that needs to be addressed in future designs.

  9. Having now in possession of my second C8 convertible (2020, 2023) I have found that any water that accumulates after rain or washing leaves the vehicle almost immediately upon getting in and driving the vehicle.
The interior remains nice and dry.
I can tell you it’s a far cry from my C3 convertible after a wash…lol.

  10. I drive my 2022 Corvette convertible in the rain. Any water that accumulates in the area mentioned drains quickly. Same for water inn that area after washing. I think the drain has been plugged.

  11. GM took the Vette way upmarket so they will now get these kind of complaints from the Porsche guys that are now driving their FIRST Corvette.
Love it or hate it the car is expensive and people with that kind of money won’t tolerate the traditional Vette “Eccentricities”.

  12. There are supposed to be drains there. When mine was new, the water didn’t stand there for a long time. But the drains don’t seem to work any more. Probably plugged up with dirt and pollen. THAT’S the design flaw.

  14. Really, just wipe it down with a chamois like I’d on my 90 convertible between the luggage carrier on the trunk,or just drive the damn thing and the water will run off. This is a spoiled brat problem not a Corvette problem.!!!

  15. If he doesn’t have a garage to put it in why not a car cover. If he can afford a Vette then he surely can afford a decent car cover.

  16. That is a terrible design by the team.
GM either didn’t realize this could happen (which would be insane) or didn’t care enough (which is just terrible) to make changes….either way it is a bad look.
Nobody would want a puddle of water just sitting on your car.

  17. Minor inconvenience for owning a truly great car.

  18. You would think that someone who can afford a C8 Corvette would have an inclosed garage or at the minimum a carport. 🤦‍♂️

  25. Wah wah wah…we’ve got a shop full of Corvettes that we drive year ’round, rain or shine, like they were made to be driven. Believe me, they clean up nicely. Get a leaf blower and blow the water off if it bothers you that much. D@mn…posts like this is why other drivers make fun of Corvette owners. Perhaps my Missus should buy a C8 convertible so she’ll have something to b!tch about.

I’ve only got caught in the rain with mine maybe half a dozen times.

However I do encounter this issue whenever I wash the vehicle.
I simply put the car in service mode & raise the engine cover with my key fob.

    That’s it….. Done!

  28. Yes. This occurs everytime I wash my 2021 C8 HTC.
    Do what I do.

Takes 3 seconds. That’s it! Issue resolved.

  29. Shut up and drive your fantastic C8…..whahhhhhhh! The only damage of any consequence would be a large hard water stain to the clear coat if not waxed. The car is beautiful, leave it alone. People nowadays are too soft. Evaluation of this “issue” is this: You are driving an awesome car which many people won’t be able to aquire and only dream of yet you are obnoxiously whining about a tiny issue that is treatable with a freaking towel, come on man. I own a 2000 C5 and I love it,it too had flaws but I don’t give a sh*t because at the end of the day I drive a Corvette and it is a privilege.
