Buick Enclave Recalled For Risk Of Exploding Driver Airbag Inflator

GM recently issued a product recall for nearly a quarter million units of the Buick Enclave as the result of an issue with the driver’s airbag. Due to a manufacturing defect, the airbag includes an inflator that may explode during deployment.
The problem: affected units of the Buick Enclave may be equipped with a driver’s side airbag inflator that, when deployed, could rupture and explode.
The hazards: if an airbag explodes when deployed, such as in a collision, the explosion may eject metal fragments into the cabin. These fragments could strike the driver or other vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.
The fix: in order to fix this issue, certified GM technicians are instructed to replace the front driver’s side airbag module. The replacement components do not include an inflator manufactured during the same time period as the original, potentially faulty components. The replacement procedure will be performed free of charge .
Affected components: front driver’s side airbag module.
Affected vehicles: 2014 through 2017 Buick Enclave.
Number of affected vehicles: there are an estimated 244,304 units of the 2014 – 2017 Buick Enclave affected by this recall. Affected units were produced between March of the 2014 calendar year and March of the 2017 calendar year. Several other GM crossovers are also affected by this recall, including the GMC Acadia and Chevy Traverse. Check out previous GM Authority coverage for more information on the recalls affecting the Acadia and the Traverse.
Owners should: GM will notify owners of affected units of the Buick Enclave crossover with letters. The letters will be mailed out by June 26th, 2023, and will include instructions to make an appointment with their local dealer to address the issue.
