General Motors unveiled the 2023 GMC Canyon back in August of 2022, revealing an all-new third generation complete with a long list of changes and updates. Now, we’re taking a closer look at the third-gen 2023 GMC Canyon to compare it to the preceding, second-gen 2022 model year. In this comparison, we’re highlighting the exterior dimensions, interior dimensions, and cargo room, as well as capacities.
Exterior Dimensions
In terms of exterior dimensions, the new 2023 GMC Canyon is considerably larger than the preceding generation, especially with regard to overall height, where the next-gen pickup is more than 9 inches taller. The 2023 GMC Canyon also presents a much wider track, as well as a reduced front overhang that’s 2.4 inches shorter than the preceding model.
To note, the overall length for the previous-generation GMC Canyon Extended Cab / Long Bed and Crew Cab / Long Bed length was 74 inches, or 1,880 mm. Meanwhile, the 2023 GMC Canyon is only offered as a Crew Cab / Short Bed.

Interior Dimensions
Inside the cabin, the 2023 GMC Canyon is actually a bit tighter than the preceding model, with nearly every measurement showing a slight decrease, the largest of which is front headroom and rear legroom, both of which are down by 1.1 inches. Front legroom, however, is up by a modest 0.2 inches.

Capacities
Lastly, we have the capacities, where we find significant changes in place for the new 2023 model year. Ground clearance is up by as much as 2.3 inches for certain configurations, while curb weight is up as well, in particular for the Denali trim level. Max towing ratings are unchanged, although a rating of 7,700-pound rating is now standard following the departure of the base-level 2.5L I4 LCV gasoline engine offered for the 2022 GMC Canyon, which had a 3,500-pound cap. Finally, payload is up slightly, expect for Denali trim levels.

Is the height of the 2023 Canyon 71.8″ as depicted in the graphic or is it 79.8 as listed in the data? The 79.8 figure seems too tall.
It’s 79.8 with the antenna. GM started including it for the 2023 model’s dimensions but the 2022 model’s leave out the antenna.
To my knowledge, the comparison chart is misleading compared to the drawing. The comparison chart shows that the 2023 Canyon is 9.2” taller than the 2022. After a lot of research and the drawing that shows the measurement comes from 2 different locations. 2022 measurement comes from the highest point of the cab and the 2023 comes from the antenna. I also did a video chat with GMC and a 5’11” man stood next to the 2023 and he was almost as tall as the cab.
That makes more sense, an over 9″ increase in height is MASSIVE!
I wonder about the difference in the height of the top of the bed. The new truck looks much higher & the truck almost looks “Hunched” in the side view.
How does the top of the cargo box compare? Specifically, will the 2022 tonneau cover fit properly on the 2023?
Thank you,
LeRoy
Seems like GM is headed in the wrong direction, making the exterior dimensions/size bigger while making the interior dimensions smaller…
I totally agree!! I was totally disappointed when I found out that the interior is narrower than my 2019 diesel canyon!
When will they be available?
Trucks have been ridiculously slow in shipping. They’ll be a year old, but command a high price due to scarcity. They should call them 2024 models because the 2023 haven’t made it to the dealerships.
Why shrink interior dimensions? I was hoping for another inch of shoulder and hip room. I guess I will keep my previous generation model. Wonder if the tighter dimensions inside are on purpose to encourage people who want a smidgen more room to buy a full size pickup which is more profitable for GM? If Ram is still considering a new Dakota, it will be interesting to see if that model has a more spacious interior.
I saw my first 2023 Colorado Trail Boss today at local dealership. It positively DWARFS my 2019 Z71 Extended cab. No way it would fit in my garage, even with a “shortie” antenna like I had to get for my current truck. The hood line alone looks like it is half a foot taller than mine, as there is less drop-off (which aids forward visibility). It is high and square at the front.
For those ppl with garages, and everyone else, the radio antenna should have been mounted at the cowl, or been incorporated into the glass. New truck is unnecessarily tall, imo, and I don’t think an LT or Z71 would fit in my garage either, even with the “lower” chassis.
The folded paper/origami look of the sheetmetal is fine, however. Nice sculpting. Interior of the Trail Boss is austere as heck except for the dash. Seat upholstery and door trim panels appear bargain-basement. The example I saw stickered at $44k!
Dwarfs? The height increased 1.2″ and that is the GMC version with the 2 inch lift.
I parked directly next to it so I could gain the proper perspective.
I don’t think you understand what the word “dwarf” means. It isn’t much smaller or insignificant in size compared to the new model. You see the side by side pics and they are pretty much the same height (hood too) then add a two inch lift. It will fit in pretty much any garage in America built after the 1940’s. A slight exaggeration…
Appreciate photo comparisons. Hope to see this provided for other vehicles.
Up 320lbs….getting to be a piggy.
I was really looking forward to the twins, because they do look better, especially the interior (at least to me.) But if they took 1″ away in leg room in the rear seat, I’ll need to keep my 2018 Colorado then. I won’t be able to fit a car seat behind the drivers seat , even if the car seat faces forward. Of course, I can’t exactly afford the Silverado with similar levels of accessories. I guess they don’t have the 6’6″ VPs around anymore to make sure they can fit all the seats like they used to. So Silverado or back to a SUV I will have to go.
Question for me is; I have a bed cover on my 2021 GMC Canyon wondering if it would fit on the new model?
No mention of the difference in the height of the top of the cargo bed. The new Gen Trucks appear to have a much taller height in that area.
