Dealer retrofits are under way for units of the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited and the 2022 GMC Sierra HD produced without the heated steering wheel feature (RPO code KI3) they were intended to be built with. The retrofit was announced in a recent GM customer satisfaction program bulletin.
Constraint on the heated steering wheel feature on certain units of 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 and Sierra HD was caused by the microchip shortage and supply chain problems during and following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Availability of the heated steering wheel feature was constrained for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited trucks produced after December 6th, 2021. The heated steering wheel was normally not offered at all on the Pro trim level, and equipped as standard on the SLE, SLT, AT4, and range-topping Denali trims.
Notably, the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited Denali trim level was shielded from the constraint and is therefore not included in the current retrofit. Additionally, the Sierra 1500 Limited is the model produced before the launch of the refreshed GMC Sierra 1500 midway through the 2022 model year.
Heated steering wheel retrofits began in late January 2023 for the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. Only units produced between the mid-model-year refresh and March 28th, 2022 production, when the heated steering wheel feature became available again, are affected by the constraint.
For the 2022 GMC Sierra HD, the retrofits are under way for affected trucks produced between December 6th, 2021 and March 27th, 2022, without the heated steering wheel (KI3) they were supposed to be equipped with.
The heated steering wheel was normally not offered at all on the Pro trim level, and only available on the SLE trim as part of the SLE Convenience Package (RPO code PCQ). Meanwhile, the feature was standard on the SLT, AT4 and Denali trim levels. The Denali trim was shielded from the constraint, meaning that once again the SLE, SLT, and AT4 trims are those involved in the current retrofit program.
Buyers of affected 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Limited and Sierra HD units were notified of the non-functional heated steering wheel feature and the future availability of a retrofit at the time of purchase. Affected vehicles for both models were indicated by the presence of the RPO code 00G on their window sticker.
