The 2023 GMC Canyon got its big reveal last August, ushering in a brand-new third generation for the midsize pickup nameplate. Updates include new exterior styling, an overhauled interior, a new powertrain, the latest tech features, and the new off-road-capable GMC Canyon AT4X. Now, GM Authority has been given an opportunity to drive the 2023 GMC Canyon for ourselves, which leads us to ask – what do you want to know about it?
Starting outside, the 2023 GMC Canyon presents new exterior dimensions that are taller and wider than the preceding generation. Exterior features include LED lighting with thin signature lights, as well as a bold rectangular grille and crisp body lines. The front air dam was also removed, while the pickup offers improved approach, departure, and breakover angles compared to the previous generation.
The updates continue inside cabin, where we find a design that was completely overhauled for the 2023 model year. Standard spec includes an 8-inch digital instrument cluster for Elevation and AT4 trim levels, while Denali and AT4X trim levels incorporate an 11-inch instrument cluster. Safety tech features include the Pro Safety package as standard, which bundles together Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking with Bicyclist Detection, IntelliBeam headlamps, Following Distance Indicator, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and Forward Collision Alert.
The powertrain spec includes the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine as standard, specifically the top 2.7L Turbo High Output variant. Maximum output is rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. The second-generation GM 8-speed automatic transmission is also included as standard, while both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available to put the power to the ground.
Under the body panels, the 2023 GMC Canyon rides on the updated GMT 31XX platform. Production takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri. Pricing starts at $38,095, including destination freight charge.

What is the fording depth?
What is the bed height – floor to top of rails?
What is the transfer case low gear ratio?
What is the actual weight of an AT4X? Is it the same as a Colorado ZR2? Official Chevy specs and media reports I’ve seen for ZR2 are 4,827, 4,940, or 5,298 lbs.
Will the new 2023 Denali 4X4 be able to flat tow behind a Motor Home. If so what would be the procedure (How many steps)?
The trucks with the 2 speed transfer case are able to be flat towed. I believe that includes all 3rd gen Canyons. The Owners Manual (available online) indicates you can flat tow.
What is the turning radius, compared to the 2nd generation trucks?
Bill
I was hoping that this publication, of any, could shed some honest light as to why it is taking so long to ship the new trucks. Mine was built 2/23 (about) and no word (advise) when it will be shipped.
Me too. My truck was built 2/24
Bill
My GMC Canyon was officially classified as “delayed”. What the heck does that mean. Also I saw where hundreds of GMC trucks were in transit, what does that mean? We may be seeing the beginning to the end of GMC, too poorly run to exist in todays market.
Thoughts on the revised transmission.
I would love to know if/when they will make the 11-inch instrument cluster an available option for at least the AT4. How can you can add the AT4 Premium Package for $1840 and the Technology Plus Package for $1550 and still not get the full instrument cluster? Even if it was an a-la-carte add on like the Bose Premium Sound System, it should be available.
I’d like to know if the new 2023 Canyon offers surround vision and also heads up display.?
Franke – yes to both.
Surround is optional on Elevation and AT4, standard on AT4X and Denali.
HUD is not available on Elevation, optional on AT4, standard on AT4X and Denali.
Thanks for the question!
Yes the Denali has the head up display, and surround vision not sure about the other models.
I have a Canyon on order sends the end of January. My dealer said it is just setting in a lot at Wentzville. Is there anyone to call to find out why so long.
I can’t seem to find in any of the 2023 Canyon literature anything about offering the Homelink Garage Door Opener option. Since most of the top end models in GMs other lines have it I’d expect the Canyon Denali to at least offer it if not include it standard. Am I missing it?
Most companies have a Public Relations Department that handles oddities like when people order something and never get it. It would be so easy to send out a note once in a while saying there are specific reasons their truck isn’t available. So why hasn’t GMC hired a PR person to smooth things out? Too big to fail or too arrogant?
For those that are concerned with the entrance height and/or availability, I have a SB 2020 Red metallic with 32k miles available.
Hi. Would like a road test on a cheaper W/T version of the 23 canyon. Any around Melbourne Florida area. Richard
Is the bed the same size as the 2022 model
Are you asking about my 2020 v. 2022. If so, yes.
I want to know why there still hundreds if not thousands of Canyons and Colorados still sitting in Wentzville. I’ve already financed my truck. I have a payment coming up. It shows “In Transit” which is a lie. There are hundreds of people that pre-ordered a truck from a dealer and still don’t have it and no one at GMC seems to care.
At first it was EPA number but now there are rumors of quality control issues. Can someone at GMC just be honest? It’s getting really ridiculous.
I used to own deer vehicles, now with all of the issues I will wait till they get done on the lots. I don’t want to buy a pig in a poke. I don’t ant to driv one go st.
Correction, I used to order new vehicles , now with all of the issues, I will wait until the dealers get some Denali’s on the lots so I can drive one first. I don’t want to buy a pig in a poke.
How well does it tow at max capacity?
Come on fellas, asking how it tows when they are barely on the road and you ask such silly questions. Lets use this system to enlighten ALL of us. I realize we like to sound off but please use a little restraint.
The V-6 is gone
How do I get off this thread.
