Both the GMC Hummer EV SUV and the GMC Hummer EV Pickup have a strange button within the drive mode selector. While the rest of the buttons activate an associated function, such as controlling the ride height and rear wheel steering features, including CrabWalk, the button in question currently doesn’t modify the functionality of any piece of onboard equipment or technology on either Hummer EV model.
The button’s icon has a triangular shape resembling an upward chevron bisected by a wide bar that almost makes it resemble a capital letter “A.” The icon is visible to the right of the central “Mode” circle on the drive mode selector.
Currently, pressing this button causes a message to appear on the DIC that reads:
Your Mode.
Your Mission.

As GM Authority Executive Editor, Alex Luft, suggests in the video, GMC could ultimately choose one of several possible uses for the mystery button. For instance, it could be programmed with a new driving mode.
A more exciting possibility in GM Authority‘s opinion would be to make the button’s function user-definable. A hypothetical user-definable button for the Hummer EV models could programmed by going into the vehicle options on the center stack and defining the button’s functionality from there. Whatever the eventual function of the button, GMC will likely activate it using an Over-The-Air (OTA) update delivered via the OnStar 4G LTE or Wi-Fi connections built into the Hummer EV models.
Regardless, it’s not every day that we see a GM vehicle shipped with button(s) that don’t have a predefined purpose, demonstrating the power of modern vehicles capable of receiving OTA updates.
Unfortunately, GM has stopped taking reservations for either the GMC Hummer EV SUV or GMC Hummer EV SUV after reaching approximately 90,000 reservations total in September 2022. Roughly 500 Hummer EV units were produced in February 2023 after a two-month pause in December 2022 and January 2023. The temporary production halt resulted from taking the GM Factory Zero facility offline in late November for upgrades related to production of the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV.
GMC currently has no official GMC Hummer EV SUV configurator at its website, but GM Authority recently published full pricing information, including options. We also have a full Hummer EV Pickup pricing breakdown for the model’s two current trims, the EV3X and the range-topping Edition 1.
In other Hummer EV news, GM recently teased an overlander Hummer EV Pickup it will produce in partnership with EarthCruiser.
As a reminder, GMC Hummer EV models are powered by GM Ultium batteries and GM Ultium Drive motors, with the range-topping trims rated at 830 horsepower for the SUV and 1,000 horsepower for the Pickup (as a result of a higher-capacity battery). Both models make 11,500 pound-feet of axle torque, or 1,200 wheel torque.
Under the skin, both GMC Hummer EV models ride on the GM BT1 platform, and production takes place at the GM Factory Zero plant in Michigan.

My first thought is it looked like a level, maybe to level the suspension similar to the camp mode on Rivian. Not that I would want a button dedicated to that.
Possibly GM’s “fix” for the leaky roof panels….push the button and an umbrella is deployed! 😄
Released this month (April 2023), Service Bulletin N222378440 is for the 2022 model year GMC HUMMER EV Pickup.
Oh, oh oh. I got this. I’ve got it!!!
Push it and it activates an exterior speaker that starts playing the following: “Carly Simon’s classic “You’re So Vain”
The driver can customize that button to their preference, vehicle settings, Drive Mode Customization.
Thanks for the note. That was not the case in my tester. I’ll look into whether that was updated recently.
