This Diesel-Powered 1982 Chevy LUV Pickup Could Be Yours

Produced in collaboration with Isuzu and initially arriving in North America in 1972, the Chevy LUV pickup (or “Light Utility Vehicle”) doesn’t skimp on the classic cool pickup vibes. That said, most were heavily used or abused, which makes this clean example from the 1982 model year a relatively rare find. Now, this 1982 Chevy LUV is up for grabs in a new online auction.

A 1982 Chevy LUV pickup offered for sale in an online auction.

Recently hitting cars and bids, this 1982 Chevy LUV boasts only 33,700 miles on the clock, and looks surprisingly clean. Outside, there’s a Metallic Blue exterior, a chrome front bumper, a rear step bumper, and a white decal running horizontally along the lower edge of the vehicle. In the corners, we see factory 14-inch steel wheels with metal hubcaps. The listing states that the only modification is diamond plating that was added at the bottom of the tailgate.

The interior boasts an exterior-matching blue finish, with vinyl upholstery, a bench seat, and manual windows. Amenities include air conditioning and an AM / FM radio.

Beyond the surprisingly clean condition and blue-on-blue colors, this Chevy LUV is also notable for its rare 2.2L diesel engine, which was only offered in the U.S. for the 1982 model year. Output is rated at 58 horsepower and 93 pound-feet of torque, which is routed to the rear tires through a 5-speed manual transmission.

All in all, this Chevy LUV is definitely not perfect, with some chips and scratches in the exterior, a broken LUV emblem, some torn upholstery, and a little rust here and there. Still, all things considered, this looks like a pretty nice find.

Now, this 1982 Chevy LUV is up for grabs at cars and bids at no reserve. As of this writing (4/3/2023), the highest bid of 14 placed thus far is set at $6,800. The auction will end on April 6th at 12:46 p.m. PDT.

      1. Louis, I understand your confusion because these diesel Chevy LUV trucks were not very common and as far as I know, 1982 was the only year the Chevy LUV could be purchased in the USA with a diesel engine. However, I once owned a 1982 Chevy LUV diesel. It was my first vehicle ever. I bought it used in 1986. It was a great little truck. In any event, I can attest to the fact that a 1982 Chevy LUV diesel was definitely manufactured. Hope this is helpful. Have a great day.
