The EPA Is Set To Announce Stricter New Vehicle Emissions Rules This Week

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expected to release new vehicle emissions rules this week that will provide automakers with greater incentive to further increase electric vehicle sales.
Per a new report from Reuters, the forthcoming EPA vehicle emissions rules will cover the 2027 through 2032 model years, and is expected to result in at least half of new vehicle sales to be fully electric or plug-in hybrids by the 2030 calendar year. The push towards greater EV adoption is in line with a goal outlined previously by President Biden. Late in 2021, the EPA finalized new light-duty emissions requirements through the 2026 model year, reversing President Trump’s emissions rollback.
It’s unclear at this time of the EPA will follow California to phase out the sale of internal-combustion-powered vehicles by the 2035 calendar year. California has yet to file a formal request to the Biden administration to push ahead with its aggressive timeline. Nevertheless, according to California Air Resources Board (CARB) executive officer Stephen Cliff, California is urging the EPA to follow similar emissions rules as the Golden State, where 68 percent of new cars sold in 2030 are set to be zero-emission vehicles.
EV producer Tesla has also called for a mandate to end the sale of internal combustion vehicles by 2030. Meanwhile, GM has stated that it will seek to end the sale of internal combustion engine products within its light duty vehicle lineup by 2035.
In support of its EV ambitions, GM has earmarked a $35 billion investment into new electric vehicle and autonomous vehicle technology by the 2025 calendar year. What’s more, GM is boosting is EV production capacity to 1 million units in North America by the end of the 2025 calendar year.
Looking ahead, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will also propose new fuel economy standards in the next few weeks.

Defund the EPA.
They are overplaying their hand. Don’t they realize the pendulum swings back? And when it swings hard one way it just swings harder the other.
It’s almost as if they want to get everyone in the EPA fired. You think self preservation would kick in at some time but when they go all out to make the costs of travel higher for everyone and skyrocket our electricity bills, they’re almost guaranteeing that power will change hands to people who are not favorable to the EPA
Unfortunately by that time your vote will be as useful as a vote in a communist controlled country. Democrat (and RINO) agenda is to have total control. Your free country will only become memory. Don’t believe me? Live long enough and you will see. Read an article by Daniel Greenfield dated April 11, 2023 “Biden Bans 53% of Americans From Buying Cars”.
FJB….
What a bunch of BS.
How about the EPA push companies and provide incentives to Start up companies to handle the 94% or plastic that we are not recycling in this country? Currently we only recycle 6% of plastic down from a height of 8%. How about making sure that people will not die from the toxic materials that are spilled across the country, like in East Palastine? Lots of work needs to be done in this country to protect the environment besides always addressing the auto industry.
How about this… making a rule for manufacturers to offer absolutely a sedan, wagon and a compact car in their lineup ! I know I know some will say to me let the market decide blablabla but nowadays it seems that the only to get a family around is with a freaking suv
I would like to a see rule that says any company that makes or sells a product, must take that product back at its end of life for proper disposal or recycling.
See how fast manufacturers reverse on making products that can’t be repaired/refurbished and how fast they start using materIals that can be easily recycled.
It’s cheaper to make new plastic than to recycle it, hence the low recycle rate.
And how fast would that change if companies had to deal with their own crap?
They internalize the profits and externalized the costs (disposal).
EPA- Extremest Political @sses
Perfect timing. I woke up today thinking, “Why isn’t the EPA putting more regulations on vehicles? We certainly need it and it is the most pressing issue of our time.” And then I come to this site and behold, they did it. Exactly what we need. Now the planet is safe.
Very sly sarcasm. It’s an art.
Not sue if it was sarcasm. I think he was serious.
I can assure you that my tongue was firmly planted in my cheek. 🙂
LOL
Glad it was recognized for what it is.
It’s called multitasking. You can do more than one thing at a time. The EPA is setting targets. That’s all they can do. It’s up to manufactures to implement those targets.
It’s how innovation happens. If you keep doing the same thing there is no reason to innovate. We have direct injection, multi valve, variable timing, etc… because of tightening regulations.
Conservatives better get serious quickly about taking this country back before it’s too late.
All conservatives seem to care about are guns, babies and drag queens. It’s hard for them to focus on anything that doesn’t show up on a 24-hour news feed. Change doesn’t happen overnight and there is only so much oil in the ground. We might not run out for hundreds of years, but that doesn’t mean you don’t start looking and using alternatives so that 100 years becomes 500 years.
Try to catch up. Some apparently missed all the fracking and shale oil production that was going on before the election in 2020. Thanks to those processes, the old “we are running out of fossil fuel” argument doesn’t wash any more. We now have thousands (!) of years of fossil fuel energy. And if not, Is your argument that scientists and engineers 100s of years from now will be dumber than today – unable to figure out how to exploit other energy alternatives?
You have that right. Conservatives do indeed care about their ability to defend themselves from an oppressive government, mentally ill gun carrying transvestites and sexualizing children in schools. That’s why we have red states. And we prefer having consumer choice, not government control and dictates. With so little electric vehicle market penetration, it’s obvious that Americans mostly prefer fossil fuel powertrains. Thanks to the success of shale oil production, we have thousands of years of fossil fuel to use. There is a finite amount of water in the oceans and sand on the beach too, but I’m not going to worry about it.
In a free country, innovation is more about customer preference than government dictating.
The death of cars and freedom happening simultaneously and nobody bats an eye, but we are talking about f****** pronouns all day
So Brandon is pushing for the elimination of ICE for our vehicles, but private jets are off limits?
The comments section here is going to be fun.
Time to get the 🍿
Yep. ‘bought what I expected. Bunch a faux rage over something that hasn’t even come out yet, and bunch of right winger anti-environment people already calling for cancel culture on the EPA.
Apparently, all y’all don’t care about improved health of your kids and neighbors and lower running costs for cars.
Tell that to China and India….
News flash: biden and his hacks could care less about the environment and people’s health.
I have an idea. Upgrade the power grid at the same time. Houses use more power now than they did 20 years ago. They’ll use more power in 20 years than they do today. The grid isn’t static.
The blackmail continues
The EPA was directed to make this move from above as it has become apparent that the move to EVs is slowing significantly and vehicle manufacturers need more incentive to produce them. As examples, GM recently announced that they would be investing almost $1B on a next generation V8 (yes, a small % of that total is for some EV parts) and a new battery plant in Indiana has been pushed back. The Malibu now has a next generation ICE vehicle coming for 2025 vs an EV replacement. Over at Ford, it was announced that the EV division of the business lost $3B last year while the pricing on the base F150 Lightning has been increased by almost $20K from the originally announced pricing due to supply chain and material cost issues. At Chrysler, the REV next generation truck has mentioned as possibly having an ICE “range extender” and Tesla has announced multiple price cuts in the face of fading demand. These examples are not coincidences but a realization by automakers and the government that current EV technology is not yet competitive from either a cost perspective or in meeting the majority of customer requirements (i.e. range and recharging time) when compared to comparable ICE vehicles. This is a move to force EVs by government fiat as it is realized that the transition will not occur in the marketplace with current technology.
GM never said an electric Malibu was going to replace the ICE version. The Equinox, Blazer, Silverado and Sierra will be available in ICE and EV forms next year. Everyone is trying to pretend the world is coming to an end because EVs exist. But next year will be like this year but with more options. GM and all other manufacturers are going to go where the money is. Tesla is making a large profit by selling a lot fewer cars than anyone. EVs are just easier to make with fewer things that can go wrong so manufacturer warranty costs are lower.
Just say NO and vote GOP always!
Wait for the hydrogen powered vehicles or Porsche ‘s version using good old H2O, except their isn’t enough water in California.
President dictating rules forcing EVs and making EV tax credits after he diverted $20 million of taxpayer money to a friend for building a Porsche dealership in Ukraine under the Electrofy Africa Act.
HEY TIM STUFF IT! Republicans have already stolen a womans right to choose and tried to steal an election. Republicans also do everything possible to prevent you from joining a union. I also agree the Democrats are losing their minds embracing the Woke ideology.
Very simplistic understanding of American government and the constitution. It’s not a federal power to make a law on abortion. It’s not in the constitution. It’s a state power unless the Constitution is amended. So if you want to kill kids, then live or travel to a messed up blue state. Overly aggressive and restrictive Unions worked over GM pretty good until 2008. Then what happened? At the same time it was O’Vomit’s car czar that gave Rick Wagner a $60m bonus to step down as GM president. Corruption is everywhere at all levels.
By the time they are done with this stuff, I will have to buy new car(s) at around $60k each, have to buy a new electric stove to replace my gas stove $1000, $2000 to run a new circuit for the electric stove, $5000 to get a new electric service panel to be able to charge two cars, buy a new electric heat pump to replace my gas furnace $10,000, electric hot water heater, $1000, and will need to pay for our upgraded local electrical distribution system, upgraded electrical transmission system, windmills to replace our dams (to save the fishies). All the while, China has more coal power plants on the books to be constructed by 2030 than we currently have running…so what are we really going to achieve with all of this besides NATIONAL BANKRUPTCY? We won’t be able to afford to produce anything here anymore, due to exorbitant cost increases outlined above. We may end up learning an important lesson, the problem with this type of approach is that sooner or later, you run out of other people’s money to spend on pipe dreams. Oh well, we will own nothing and we will like it!
Right. All this increased government regulation is about taking away the freedom of having a car and putting you on public transportation – like a Soviet or Chinese population. Better fight it or your kids will suffer.
Soon they will want to control how much carbon dioxide you exhale when breathing!
True, but at least carbon emissions will be down in North America and Europe, while going up substantially in China etc…we will have done our part, and we can ‘feel’ good about that. We have to remember that we have passed the point of no return for the 14th time now on emissions (it is worse than they thought again), now only Klaus’ idea of essentially “we will own nothing, and we will like it”, can save us from ourselves.
Can someone let us all know which President made the EPA and what the EPA was tasked with doing if at all possible?
I believe the EPA was before my time so I would love to know. Thanks in advance everyone.
Richard Nixon in 1970
@Tigger
Thank you.
Wasn’t Nixon a Republican President?
I could be wrong here, but it is possible that you already knew the answer to that one…just a wild guess on my part.
@Fred
Just pointing out how insane blasting the EPA from some has become ; )
You caught me HaHa
Labels mean nothing. It’s the policies that count. Nixon had very liberal policies.
