While a properly equipped 2023 GMC Canyon is already a very capable off-road machine, General Motors takes the Canyon’s all-terrain prowess up another notch with the 2023 Canyon AT4X and upcoming Canyon AT4X AEV Edition. In reality, The General is aiming to tap into the hardcore overlanding space with the introduction of these new models.
In fact, it isn’t just the Canyon that attempts to appeal to the overlanding crowd. The 2023.5 GMC Sierra AT4X – which now features AEV components – and upcoming Sierra AT4X AEV Edition are intended to intrigue this niche.
With this in mind, GM Authority Executive Editor Alex Luft asked GMC designers at the 2023 GMC Canyon media drive if this concept influenced the 2023 Canyon’s design.
“It offered up a lot of opportunities that we weren’t looking at for that truck,” GMC designers are quoted as saying. “When we built that concept, we built it around what that overland customer could do. When you look at the overland space, we want GMC to be in there, because GMC has an unbelievable reliability score and customer base. That concept was kind of a tool for us to realize what that could be.”
This shift in ideology may be traced back to the debut of the GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX concept (later renamed the Canyon AT4 concept) at the Overland Expo Mountain West 2021 event. This concept featured many items found on the second-gen Canyon AT4X, including Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear electronic locking differentials, and additional underbody protection.
It’s worth noting that Toyota is also exploring the overlanding niche with the Toyota Tundra Trailhunter concept, as well as with the redesigned 2024 Toyota Tacoma, which will offer a Trailhunter trim level.
As a quick reminder, the 2023 Canyon AT4X is powered by the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine in High-Output tune, rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, and paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission.
Under the skin, the all-new Canyon rides on an updated version of the GMT 31XX platform, internally known as the 31XX-2.

What a crock.
GMC has lost touch with its market.
It has strained customer relations and raised their prices to the Outer Limits!
Make fewere vehices and charge more for them – get the profits up!
Yes! Why not? That’s called pricing power. Every company wants pricing power. Think Apple. They are in the business to make money, not to satisfy your whims.
Got to love when GMC tells customers 2 months for shipping is totally normal and nothing is wrong, but to ask Dealers for updates. Then the dealer says they have absolutely no clue what is going on. What normal manufacturer wants product that has been made for 2 months and is sold to sit around?
They don’t it to sit there, and if they could ship them they would. It isn’t a GM thing, it isn’t they dropped the ball, it is a supplier issue with people, transportation and parts. In this day 2 months is normal, GM is even trying their own hand at shipping to help alleviate it. Maybe try reading up on it so you know what is the actual cause rather than trying to place wrongful blame?
Be glad it is ONLY 2 months! you could be like me, waiting TWELVE Flipping Years for a new Dakota !!! talk about BULLSH*T
I just built one online. $67k+ for a CANYON??? I hate this timeline.
I’m just here to complain, because I am certain everyone else wants to hear my negative thoughts about this vehicle!
