One Third Of U.S. Consumers Would Buy An EV, Poll Finds

As the nascent EV market continues to heat up, a new poll has found that more than one-third of Americans would consider purchasing an all-electric vehicle.

According to a recent report from Reuters, a seven-day poll found that 34 percent of Americans would consider an all-electric vehicle, while 31 percent of respondents replied that they wouldn’t. When viewing the results through a political lens, 50 percent of Democrats would buy an EV, while 27 percent and 26 percent of Independents and Republicans, respectively, would also consider purchasing an all-electric vehicle.

The poll also found that 56 percent of respondents would pay no more than $49,999 for a new EV. While President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act helps to bring prices down thanks to the $7,500 Federal EV tax credit, a majority of all-electric vehicles still sticker north of $50,000.

In addition, 35 percent of respondents want an EV that can travel upwards of 500 miles on a single charge. Another 37 percent want a 300-mile range minimum.

For reference, the poll was conducted online, and surveyed 4,410 people throughout the U.S.

As a reminder, President Biden has a goal of seeing 50 percent of all new vehicle sales to be EVs or hybrids by 2030. Complimenting this goal, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is set to roll out new and more stringent emissions regulations in the coming days.

It’s worth noting that President Biden has not endorsed California’s emissions policies, where the Golden State plans to phase out all ICE-powered light duty vehicles by 2035.

In response to this, Steven Cliff, California Air Resources Board Executive Officer, said that the federal government should “look at stringency that’s equivalent to our rules. We’re 68 percent zero emissions in 2030 so modeling that and looking at that as an option for 2030 is absolutely critical.”

In regard to General Motors specifically, the Detroit-based automaker has a goal of offering 30 EVs worldwide by 2025, and plans to offer EVs in one-third of all vehicle segments by 2025.
