No. 48 NASCAR Chevy On Pole At Richmond Spring 2023

Rain forced NASCAR to cancel on-track qualifying on April 1^st, 2023 for the Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway, and instead, the lineup was set by formula rather than on-track speed. That puts the No. 48 NASCAR Chevy Camaro ZL1 of Alex Bowman on the pole position – and hands the first four starting positions to The Bow Tie.

As a reminder, in the event that qualifying cannot be completed for any reason, NASCAR relies on a formula in order to set the lineup. This formula takes into account an individual driver’s performance in the previous weekend’s race with the following metrics:

• Fastest lap time position (15 percent)
• Driver’s final race position (25 percent)
• Owner’s final race position (25 percent)
• Owner points position (35 percent)

Behind Bowman’s No. 48 Camaro will be the No. 8 Camaro of Kyle Busch, followed by the No. 24 Camaro of William Byron and the No. 1 Camaro of Ross Chastain in third and fourth, respectively. Tyler Reddick’s No. 45 Toyota TRD Camry will round out the top five.

It’s worth noting that Bowman’s No. 48 Camaro was one of several NASCAR Chevy teams to incur heavy penalties a few weeks ago at Phoenix. However, he and his Hendrick Motorsports teammates, including the No. 24 Camaro of Byron, the No. 5 Camaro of Kyle Larson and the No. 9 Camaro of Josh Berry, won their appeal to the National Motorsports Appeal Panel; as such, their crew chiefs are still suspended for four point-paying races and must pay a fine of $100,000 each, but the drivers were given their points back, putting NASCAR Chevy teams ahead of the pack when it comes to the championship.

The green flag for the Cup Series race at Richmond will drop on Sunday, April 2^nd, 2023 at 3:30 p.m. ET.
