Lotus Envya Caught Testing Is A Potential Corvette EV Sedan Rival

A prototype of an upcoming all-electric sedan, the Lotus Envya, was recently caught testing on the Nürburgring. With Lotus likely aiming to compete with current electric sedans – like the Porsche Taycan – the electrified Envya would serve as a rival to a potential Corvette EV sedan.

With innards likely based off the all-new Lotus Eletre electric crossover, the Envya – internally codenamed Type 133 – is expected to sport a 112kWh battery pack that powers two electric motors, one per axle. Two different output figures are expected, with 603-horsepower and 905-horsepower ratings anticipated. This powertrain would have a maximum charging speed of up to 350 kW.

While the car was originally scheduled to be revealed during the 2023 calendar year, a 2024 introduction is more likely at this point. The Envya’s cockpit features a four-seat layout, split up by a full-length center console, while a full glass roof should be available as well.

As GM Authority has previously reported, GM has been in the process of considering an electric Corvette sedan to complete in the segment that the Envya would likely compete in. Although many Corvette fans and enthusiasts may balk at the idea of “America sports car” straying from its roots as a two-door, V8-powered sports car, it’s important to note that General Motors has already alluded to the potential of an entire Corvette sub-brand, which would include an all-electric Vette sedan.

Likely based on the GM BEV Prime vehicle platform, and utilizing next-generation GM Ultium batteries and GM Ultium Drive motors for motivation, an electric Corvette sedan wouldn’t be the only variant. The General has also been considering the development of a new all-electric Corvette crossover, which would compete against the likes of the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo.

One more piece to consider is GM’s commitment to go full EV across its passenger vehicle lineup by 2035. In order for this event to come to fruition, and the Corvette to remain a mainstay in the Chevy lineup, it would have to go all-electric.

  1. GM should buy Lotus and kill Tesla with this car.

    1. Was thinking Lotus was be a smart buy. It would be a good investment in premium putting GM in the company of VW and Stellantis with high end brands.
Lotus Corvette dealerships would be amazing. For Corvette as a multi car brand it must move from Chevy. No vehicle competing with Porche can share space with Trax.

      1. Agree with everything except GM buying Lotus. Firstly it’s not for sale. Secondly, GM has a history of buying brands and running them into the ground, eg Saab. No need when Corvette is already essentially a one model sub brand with GM’s best engineers. If anything, lotus shows how it can be done, going from basically a tiny one or two model sports car manufacturer and then with injection of Chinese money, a full manufacturer with a super SUV, a sedan and a hyper car. While transferring to all electric. All this is well within Corvette’s wheelhouse as a stand alone brand with GM’s support.

        1. GM of today isn’t old GM. This stripped down company could handle premium brands so long as managment wasn’t via Detroit.
VW & FCA (Stellantis) can handle portfolios of acquired brands. GM is capable of the same. Wish they’d buy MG from SAIC since it now builds a car based on Avista concept.

    2. Geely, a pretty big global automotive company has a majority stake in Lotus. I don’t think Geely will ever give it up.

      1. GM has a history of screwing up international brands but this doesn’t mean GM can’t inject a solid company with capital and not allow it to be swallowed by Detroit bean counters.
Geely is an interesting company and one of few Chinese not controlled by government. Went from to selling junk to, after learning from Volvo, producting quality vehicles. Wonder if Lotus is where Polestar engines will be sourced from?

    3. GM did own a piece of Lotus in the late 1980’s through the early 1990’s.

      1. Lotus designed the Corvette DOHC ZR1 engine for Corvette in 1990. The engine was then built by Mercury Marine.

        1. That engine was designed by Lotus and GM, not Lotus alone.

          1. The Corvette design team oversaw the project, but the engine design was by Lotus. Lotus also did work on the suspension.

  3. Lotus HAD BETTER BE CHEAP BECAUSE IT LOOKS LIKE A GLORIFIED TOYOTA ! It cant compare to the Corvette

  4. Just exactly what is the point of an ultra high horsepower electric vehicle when the real issue with electric is Battery Range and the built-in charging infrastructure to charge these 200 mile full battery charge estimated range vehicles? I mean, aside from “Mine’s Bigger Than Yours” bragging rights down at the local charging stations?

The idea of a Corvette car brand means the corporate board is ready to downsize itself even further. Corvette Brand, Cadillac Brand, Buick for the Chinese and a stand alone Pickup brand, a quasi GMC/Bowtie brand based on price scale…bowtie for the entry level buyers and GMC for the upscale folks. Everything else see’s it’s die tooling and presses removed and sold to Chinese interests……
