The all-new third generation of the GMC Canyon pickup is currently rolling off GM production lines with the 2023 GMC Canyon, bringing a fresh lineup of features to the midsize truck nameplate – including revised exterior styling, an overhauled interior, new technology, and a new powertrain.
Now, GM Authority has learned what GM’s planned sales mix is for the 2023 GMC Canyon. The mix includes the Elevation, AT4 and Denali trim levels, produced since January 24th, 2023, and the off-road 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X trim level, which kicked off production in April.
This is what GM expects the sales mix to be among the four trims available following the start of regular production (SORP) of the AT4X on April 10th, 2023:
- Elevation: 35.5 percent
- AT4: 33 percent
- AT4X: 18.5 percent
- Denali: 13 percent
As part of its overhaul, the 2023 GMC Canyon is taller and wider than the previous generation, improving the pickup’s approach, departure, and breakover angles. GM fully refreshed the truck’s exterior design, adding new LED exterior lighting signatures and omitting the front air dam.
The Canyon’s interior is also reworked, with the Elevation and AT4 trims receiving a standard 8-inch digital instrument cluster and the Denali and AT4X trim levels featuring an 11-inch cluster. The truck includes a wide assortment of standard convenience and safety tech features, with even more available as part of option packages.
The GMC Canyon’s 2023 model year also debuts the Canyon AT4X, a new off-road-focused trim level that has already gained an enthusiastic reception from GMC pickup drivers. This exciting, adventure-ready addition to the Canyon lineup offers a factory lift, ultra-wide front and rear tire tracks, standard 33-inch tires, Multimatic DSSV shocks, front and rear e-lockers, and underbody skid plates.
GM also offers a limited-run 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X Edition 1 with even more off-road elements, including front- and rear-facing underbody cameras with a wash function, 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, an off-road front bumper, a winch, a grille-mounted 30-inch off-road light bar, a front skid plate and a Comeup Winch.
The Edition 1 sold out within 10 minutes of order books opening according to Global Vice President of Buick, GMC, and GMC Hummer EV at General Motors Duncan Aldred. The 2023 GMC Canyon AEV Edition is still on the way, incorporating the Edition 1 upgrades plus an AEV-branded intake snorkel, unique beadlock-capable wheels, and possibly other off-road or styling features.
As a reminder, the 2023 GMC Canyon is equipped as standard with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine in the High-Output tune, developing 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. Available drivetrains for the 2023 GMC Canyon include either 2WD or 4WD for the base Elevation trim, while the AT4, AT4X, and Denali trim levels are equipped with 4WD as standard.
Under the body panels, all 2023 Canyon trim levels ride on the updated GMT 31XX-2 platform. Production of the 2023 GMC Canyon takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

My dealer is still waiting for an allocation to build the truck that they ordered with my specifications. This sure is frustrating. It seems like the Canyons/Colorados are popular enough for them to increase production but the dealers still claim parts shortages, etc. It’s still hard to fathom these continuing factors that are affecting almost every facet of our economy. Enough said.
A Beautiful pic up truck. You could probably sale some over seas too have you ever thought about that? Not everyone wants to climb rocks or mountains or going through mad and swamps. Do you know that diesel engine will last you longer take you farther cheaper and cleaner too 😉??
Believe me although I’m sure you prob don’t lol but it is definitely part shortages. It seems crazy to us to but I promise it’s parts
Let see.. mine left the assembly plant over a month ago… I could have either gotten Amazon to ship it (how much for next day with Premium) for the same price as the destination charge or gone there and picked out to myself.. oye!!
Most vehicles are still being delayed due to parts shortages. If the dealer told you it left the plant a month ago, they are likely lying to you or it was shipped to a secondary lot where it is awaiting additional parts.
I understand everyone gets impatient waiting for a new vehicle, but these just started production in late January. Depending on what options you ordered, you may be waiting a while.
can’t you find out more info using your VIN number?
You actually can’t. VIN is assigned once it’s on the manufacturing line, it does not mean that the vehicle will come off the line ready to ship. Assuming the vehicle can pass the quality gates at the end of the line, even if it’s still missing parts it will be marked for shipping. It may be shipped straight to the dealer, it may be shipped to a lot to wait for additional parts. I am sure someone at GM has visibility into the actual status, but the dealership won’t know anything other than it was shipped.
You got a thumbs down from someone and yet you are 100% correct
I live in a rural area where there is a high concentration of pickup trucks, most of which are manufactured by one of the Big Three. I still have not seen a 2023 Canyon on the road. The first weekend in April I stopped in at a GMC dealer located about 40 miles away. None on the lot.
So far they are about as common as chicken with teeth.
Nothing good will come out of buying one of these trucks. Not fuel mileage, not trade in value and surely not dependability. A 2.7 really! No, but it’s a turbo! GM really dropped the ball on this one.
You do realize everyone else except Nissan is doing this. Also this engine was designed like a diesel so it should lat a long time. No one seems to have many issues with the 2.7t in the Cadillac or Silverado.
Turbo 4’s today are nothing like they were just 10-15 years ago. Many of GM 2.0t get well over 200k. So this ones even beefier than them. yes the mileage isn’t great but its a truck with larger tires than the previous models.
Everyone is heading in the direction of electric also and many of us don’t want that either. Just because many are doing it doesn’t make it right or wanted by all.
You keep pointing out the sold out in 10 mins story but I ordered one end of March and it was accepted April 3rd.
Doesn’t GM have a customer vehicle tracking app? For new builds?
And they all just sit in Missouri…
The sad part is the lack of transparency to the consumer is atrocious. I truly am utterly shocked. I ordered mine back in late December, or I should say put my order in. It was only excepted by GM two weeks ago last Thursday still no date for production and nobody knows anything. I was fortunate enough to get an allocation for a Porsche 911 a year and a half ago, and the experience was the
second to none, they kept you in the loop throughout the entire building process with pictures of the marriage of the engine to the chassis as it left the paint booth and then when it finally got to the end of production they sent you a picture then they gave you a map and show you where the vehicle was out in the sea all the way until it got to its destination dealership., and GM can’t do any of that I mean come on? I sure hope all of the people that are coming back with complaints of the quality control, such as orange, peel poor workmanship on the interior is not to be true because this is really been a real bummer.
Really? You’re comparing the process of ordering a Porsche to a GMC and are expecting the same experience? Highly recommend you immediately adjust your expectations or you’ll be sorely disappointed.
Why don’t you offer to pay GMC and extra $100k and I’m sure they’ll offer you a similar experience. It’ll still cost you less to buy the Canyon versus the 911.
GM has to get it’s head in the game!
No one can comprehend GMs business model. They are just so disappointing from the very top down to the high school drop out salesman. It used to be GM and the customer were one business chain rotating their new vehicles with the same customer. Now with the International business model the customer becomes the prey and GM keeps making excuses for faulty and bad engineered vehicles saturating car dealerships with cars that the main stream population are not looking for. GM, the consumer wants value and not lemons.
The reality is that these could have been great trucks. Keep the diesel option in it or even offer the LZO 3.0L diesel in it and you would have sold me. I was going from a 17 Silverado 5.3L anxiously awaiting this Colorado/Canyon model. They did it all right but the motor. I don’t want a match that burns twice as hot and half as long. They can keep this one. I’ll stick to the Silverado lineup so long as I can still afford to. At least 10 years from now we can look back and wish for even this crappy 4 cylinder turbo that still sips dead dinos instead of charging off some gigantic wiring and a breaker that’s bigger and takes more energy than your stove.
My AT4 was built on march 23rd and I received it on April 11th and its amazing
Good for you! Do you live close to the factory?
Northwest Indiana
Hopefully arriving soon?
