After months of teaser images and prototype spy shots, the off-road focused 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 has finally made its official debut, bringing newfound all-terrain capabilities to the heavy-duty pickup. Of course, as an HD truck, the Silverado HD ZR2 will likely also be expected to perform towing and hauling duties. With this in mind, here’s how the 2024 Silverado HD ZR2’s towing and payload capacities stack up against the competition.
Before diving right in, here’s a quick breakdown on the Chevy Silverado HD ZR2’s powertrain specifications. The naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, is equipped as standard fare, while the uprated 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine, rated at 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque, is available. The Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission handles the shifting duties for both powerplants.
With this in mind, here the rundown on how the 2024 Silverado HD ZR2 compares to the competition in regard to towing and payload capacities.

It’s important to keep a few things in mind. Firstly, the Silverado HD ZR2, as well as both the Ram HD Rebel and Power Wagon, are 2500-series pickups only. Meanwhile, Ford’s Tremor package is available for both F-250 and F-350 trucks.
In addition, the base Ram 2500 Tradesman Crew Cab offers a Power Wagon package that adds most of the Power Wagon’s features for an extra $7,995 – while tow and payload ratings are the same. The Power Wagon remains Dodge’s most capable off-road truck as it’s equipped with both front and rear e-lockers.
As can be seen in the comparison above, the Silverado HD ZR2 can conventionally tow a maximum of 18,500 pounds when equipped with the 6.6L L5P diesel, and boasts a maximum payload of 3,397 pounds when equipped with the 6.6L L8T gasser. Notably, the maximum towing ratings are for both “regular” and Bison models, while the maximum hauling figure only applies to the “regular” HD ZR2.
These ratings stack up very nicely compared to the Ford and Ram offerings. Both the F-250 and F-350 Tremor pickups can tow a maximum of 18,200 pounds, while the Ram Rebel has a maximum towing rating of 16,870 pounds.
However, in terms of payload, the Blue Oval outdoes the Bow Tie off-roader with a maximum hauling capacity of 4,175 pounds. Meanwhile, the maximum Ram payload rating is 3,140 pounds.
As a reminder, the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 joins the likes of the Chevy Colorado ZR2 and Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 as an all-terrain machine with unique off-road features to facilitate a go-anywhere attitude. These features include Multimatic DSSV dampers, unique front upper and lower control arms and steering knuckles, a larger steel transfer case skid plate, a front aluminum skid plate, a rear e-locker, and 18-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires.
Production of the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 is currently scheduled to kick off later this summer at the GM Flint plant in Michigan, while official pricing information will be released closer to the start of production.
