The GM Authority Take
GMC Sierra sales continue a positive trend, showing that Big Red’s bread-and-butter offering is very much in demand. The uptick recorded during Q1 was the result of greater availability, enabling quick turns.
Also, GMC is not sitting on its laurels, instead improving and expanding its lineup in order to boost the bottom line for GM’s primary money makers. Combining sales of the Sierra with those of the Chevy Silverado again made GM the king of overall full-size pickup truck sales in the U.S.

2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X
About GMC Sierra
The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 introduces only a handful of changes and updates over the refreshed 2022 Sierra 1500.
The big news for 2023 is the debut of the first-ever 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition as the most off-road-capable factory Sierra 1500 ever, developed with input from American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) like the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison and first-ever 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison. Additionally, the “standard” 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X receives new equipment from the AEV Edition.
For 2024, the GMC Sierra 2.7L engine will be branded TurboMax. Furthermore, the upcoming 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 is set to receive the second-generation Hydra-Matic 8L80 eight-speed automatic transmission in conjunction with the aforementioned turbo 2.7L L3B engine. Additionally, the 2024 Sierra AT4X will offer the LZ0 Duramax diesel engine, delivering more low-end torque that’s particularly useful for off-roading. It joins the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine as an available powerplant, which will get the Active Exhaust system.
Last fall GM also debuted the refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD featuring fresh exterior styling, a new interior, powertrain updates, and more. The refresh is highlighted by the arrival of the premium 2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate, the pinnacle of heavy-duty trucks. Joining the new range-topping trim level will be the “seriously off-road capable” 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4X as an even-more-capable off-road version of the current GMC Sierra HD AT4. Additionally, the 2024 Sierra HD gets new standard equipment across the lineup.
Under the hood, the 2024 GMC Sierra continues offering the same two engines, with the 6.6L L8T V8 gasoline engine being standard, while the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine being optional. While power and torque for the gas motor remain the same, the Duramax boasts an improved, SAE-certified output boost to 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. For 2024, both the diesel engine and the gasoline engine now connect to GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission as standard, which replaces the GM six-speed equipped mated to gasoline-powered models previously.
About GMC Hummer EV Pickup
Production of the 2022 Hummer EV Pickup began when the first Edition 1 model rolled off the assembly line. The all-electric truck is based on GM’s dedicated “Ulti-body” electric GM BT1 platform. A different variant of the same the BT1 architecture is used by the upcoming Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV.
The Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 produces 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of wheel torque, while the Hummer EV SUV Edition 1 develops 830 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of wheel torque. The Watts to Freedom mode pushes the new pickup to 60 mph in just 3 seconds. Both output figures are sourced from GM Ultium battery and GM Ultium Drive motor technologies.
Other standout features for the pickup include adaptive air suspension, Extract Mode, Terrain Mode with one-pedal driving, the revolutionary CrabWalk Mode, UltraVision cameras, and more.
The 2023 Hummer EV Pickup offers a new 3X Launch Package for the EV3X and a new Sport Package for that trim level and the Edition 1, while losing the Sky Convertible Top option.
In February our spies spotted a prototype testing of the first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali. This particular model appears to be a Sierra EV Denali Edition 1, which is the only variant billed for the 2024 model year. All other models, including “regular” Denali, AT4, and Elevation, will be offered for the 2025 model year.
GM competitor Stellantis responded recently by debuting its battery electric 2025 Ram 1500 REV with a 500-mile range that bests the Chevy Silverado EV and the GMC Sierra EV. The RAM 1500 REV is the follow-on to the Ram 1500 Revolution pickup concept light-duty pickup truck presented at the beginning of the year. The Ram electric truck will offer an optional range-extending gasoline engine in a unique hybrid setup, wherein the onboard ICE will generate electricity rather than send rotational energy to the drivetrain for “class-shattering range.”
Stellantis also claims the Ram 1500 REV boasts class-leading 14,000-pound towing capacity. The 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 will have max towing capacity of up to 9,500 pounds, though some trims of Sierra EV’s corporate cousin – the Chevy Silverado EV – will be able to tow as much as 20,000 pounds.
With the introduction of the refreshed GMC Sierra 1500 and Sierra HD, bringing GMC’s most modern and most competitive trucks with the most expansive lineups ever, Sierra sales should continue to grow over time for GM’s premium full-size pickup truck lineup. This is especially true as the Professional Grade ups its game with industry leading variants like the ultra-luxurious Denali Ultimate and highly off-road capable AT4X, including the first-ever special edition from AEV.
Additionally, GMC has launched the Sierra in other countries, namely the Middle East, Mexico, and most recently South Korea, which ought to boost sales well into the future.

GM ICE trucks kick butt!
GMC makes the best trucks! Not sure, except for price, why anyone would buy the Chevy variant. I’m honestly suprised sales aren’t even higher & GM should do more special editions & adverts to further boost sales.
RAM offers a strong, well designed truck & it will continue nipping at Chevy’s heels. RAM has a unique look w/modern style. As for Ford I still can’t figure out attraction.
GMC is GM’s best brand. Ruess needs to mb ade sure next Terrain and Arcadia offer more than Jeep and Toyota which shouldn’t be that hard.
