GMC Sierra 1500 Power Outlet Retrofits Are Under Way

Offered as the fifth model year for the current fourth-generation pickup truck, the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 ushers in a few important updates and changes over the refreshed 2022 model year. However, as GM Authority exclusively covered previously, some units of the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 were built without functional power outlets. Now, however, General Motors will retrofit affected units to make the power outlets functional.

Per previous GM Authority coverage, units of the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 affected by this constraint were produced as of last September. The constraint was for both the 120V instrument panel power outlet (RPO code KI4), and the 120-volt bed-mounted power outlet (RPO code KC9). While affected units include the physical installation of these features, the outlets are non-functional. The constraint was the result of the global microchip shortage, with the DC / AC inverter on affected units sold as non-functional.

Units of the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 affected by the constraint were sold with RPO code 08R added to the window sticker. Affected trim levels include Sierra 1500 SLE and Elevation, while Sierra 1500 Pro, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate trim levels were not affected by the constraint.

Now, GM will retrofit affected units with the components needed to make these features functional. The parts required for the retrofit include three nuts, a fuse, and two inverter kits. GM technicians are instructed to install the accessory AC and DC power control module, as well as install the fuse and reprogram the body control module (BCM).

Notable updates for the 2023 model year include the introduction of the new 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine, which arrives as the “second iteration” of the GM Duramax 3.0L engine. The new LZ0 engine replaces the LM2 engine offered previously.

Further engine options include the turbocharges 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, the atmospheric 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, and finally, the atmospheric 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine. Under the body panels, the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 rides on the GM T1 platform, while production takes place at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana, as well as the GM Silao plant in Mexico.

  1. I took delivery of a 2023 Sierra Denali last month, assembled at Silao, and the outlets are clearly not functional. I can only conclude that the inverters were skipped on more than just the less expensive trims.
