GM has issued a safety recall for certain units of the model year 2003 to 2023 GMC Savana Cutaway vehicles.
GM produces Cutaway units with an unused circuit in the lower section of the left side B-pillar. Final-stage manufacturers can optionally use this circuit to connect a rear HVAC system when finishing the 2023 GMC Savana Cutaway as a utility van, hicube, box truck, or other configuration. 2003 to 2023 Chevy Express Cutaway vehicles are also produced with this unused rear HVAC blower motor circuit.
The problem: when the final-stage manufacturer completes the 2003 to 2023 GMC Savana Cutaway the connectors or cut wires of the rear HVAC blower motor circuit in the may be left unsealed.
The hazards:Â if unsealed, the cut wires or connectors of the left side B-pillar rear HVAC blower motor circuit may corrode over time when exposed to moisture or contamination. High current draw through the circuit could result, producing heat and potentially creating a fire hazard.
The fix:Â the dealership should properly seal the rear HVAC blower motor circuit of affected 2003 to 2023 GMC Savana Cutaway units. This task involves installation of RAYCHEM splice sealing end caps and/or yellow DuraSeal splice sleeves on the end of the circuit wiring as appropriate. Locally sourced end caps or splice sleeves can be used if the GM-recommended parts are unavailable.
Dealers should confirm whether a specific vehicle is affected before starting the repair. Confirmation is available through the GM Global Warranty Management system by navigating to the Investigate Vehicle History screen. The vehicle will be marked “open” if it is involved in the safety recall.
GM instructs its dealers to keep all affected 2003 to 2023 GMC Savana Cutaway units currently in inventory. The vehicles should not be delivered to buyers, used in dealership trades, or featured in demonstrations before the appropriate repair is finished. Federal law is violated if a dealer selling, leases, or trades the recalled vehicles prior to repair.
Affected components:Â rear HVAC blower motor circuit (B-pillar).
Affected vehicles:Â
- 2003 to 2023 GMC Savana Cutaway
- 2003 to 2023 Chevy Express Cutaway
Number of affected vehicles:Â There are 10,440 GMC Savana Cutaway units affected by this recall, in addition to 138,588 Chevy Express Cutaway units.
Owners should: GM will notify owners of affected vehicles and inform them to make a dealership service appointment.
