GM Ventures and Nanoramic Laboratories has announced a new agreement that sees General Motors investing an undisclosed amount of capital in Nanoramic.
As an energy storage and advanced materials company, Nanoramic has developed an electrode technology – named Neocarbonix – intended for cathode and anode applications. This technology allows batteries to be cheaper per kWh, and still deliver exceptional performance. By circumventing conventional battery production techniques, Nanoramic is able to create a product that reduces the emissions footprint of battery manufacturing by as much as 25 percent.
“Nanoramic shares GM’s commitment to an all-electric future, and we are thrilled by our collaboration,” Nanoramic CEO Eric Kish was quoted as saying. “Nanoramic’s Neocarbonix at the Core technology is uniquely positioned to support lower cost in batteries, a key to continuing EV growth. This technology is an innovative and practical solution to commercialize batteries with strong performance, better environmental friendliness, and vitally lower cost.”
For some background on Nanoramic, the U.S.-based company has 14 years of experience, along with 150 patents granted or pending. Development of the Neocarbonix technology is intended to yield increased energy capabilities and density of batteries, while reducing costs.
“Our integrated technology strategy aims to combine Nanoramic’s breakthrough technology with GM’s extensive network of resources to build more efficient EV batteries,” GM Ventures President Kent Helfrich was quoted as saying. “This collaboration has the potential to improve both cost and sustainability in battery manufacturing for our Ultium EV Platform.”
As a reminder, General Motors has been making a bevy of investments like this as of late. It comes as no surprise, as the Detroit-based automaker has a goal of offering 30 EVs by 2025, and in order to qualify for Federal tax credits, is establishing production of battery components domestically.

More R&D like this is the only way EVs become mainstream.
This is probably good news for those who want an EV, but it means nothing to me.
Need some “nano” electrical wiring information for wiring my garage for the better 220 volt charger wiring and optimal locations of the outlets. Right now dealers can not provide this information. “Nano” is better than None.
Did the GM press release say they plan to offer 30 EV’s by 2025, or BUILD 30 EV’s by 2025. Just askin’.
