GM Vehicle Logistics Supplier To Build New Storage Facility In Flint

Precision Vehicle Holdings, the company that handles vehicle storage and logistics at the GM Flint Assembly plant in Michigan, is poised to build a new storage facility roughly one mile away from the GM Flint plant.

According to a recent report from MLive, the new storage facility will be built on the site of a former restaurant located just south of the GM Flint plant, on the corner of Van Slyke and Bristol Road.

Details on the new storage facility, including a timeline for when the facility will be operational, are currently unavailable. However, has been reported that the facility will be constructed on an 8-acre parcel.

The GM Flint Assembly plant is located at 3100 Van Slyke, Flint, Michigan. The facility first opened in 1947 as part of a post-World War II building boom, making it GM’s longest-running assembly plant in North America. The facility currently spans some 5.2 million square feet across 159 acres, and employees roughly 3,200 workers. The facility produces the Chevy Silverado HD and the GMC Sierra HD pickup trucks. To note, the GM Assembly plant is not the same facility as the similarly named GM Flint Engine plant, the latter which handles engine production.

The need for local vehicle storage around the GM Flint plant was exacerbated by production issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. GM has been storing incomplete pickup trucks at various locations per the automaker’s build shy strategy. These locations include the Bishop Airport, a vacant field east of Interstate 75, as well as the old Buick City site. It was reported that GM was storing tens of thousands of incomplete pickups at various lots around Michigan around the height of the pandemic.

According to MLive, which cites Susan Harvey, senior vice president for Ashley Capital, the company under contract to purchase the Buick City site, simply storing GM vehicles at the Buick City site has become a rather sizable operation, involving two companies and 150 jobs simply to move and secure the vehicles.
