Full-Size GM Truck Sales Blow Past Ford F-Series In Q1 2023

GM full-size pickup truck sales increased nine percent to 194,192 units in the United States during the first quarter of 2023. Chevy Silverado sales grew five percent to 126,992 units, while GMC Sierra sales were up 19 percent to 67,198 units. As has historically been the case, GM continued to sell about twice as many Silverados as Sierras. Meanwhile, the all-electric GMC Hummer EV pickup moved just two units during the quarter, joining other EV entries that are now part of this segment and a strange new world for diehard truck fans.

The solid sales performance of GM’s full-size pickup truck nameplates, the ICE-powered Silverado and Sierra, along with the Hummer EV Pickup (which had little impact this time around), enabled The General to outsell the Ford F-Series by nearly 24K units during the quarter, holding the title of being the best-selling manufacturer of full-size pickups in America. Additionally, GM handily outsold the Ram Pickup by nearly 89K units.

Note that the F-Series line item includes the F-150 ICE models plus the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning, as well as the Super Duty line of heavy duty trucks. The Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan continue as ICE-powered competitors.

Combining Chevy Silverado sales with GMC Sierra sales (plus the couple of Hummer EV Pickup deliveries) gives GM a segment-leading share of 38 percent with 194,192 deliveries. The Ford F-Series posted a 34 percent segment share with 170,377 deliveries, while the Ram Pickup held a 21 percent share with 105,350 deliveries. The Tundra posted a six percent share with 27,651 units while the Titan’s share was just one percent with 4,038 units. Only the GM and Ford models were in the green, while combined sales of the Tundra and Titan accounted for less than half of Sierra deliveries alone.

The full-size pickup truck segment grew six percent to 501,608 units during Q1 2023, meaning sales of GM models combined outperformed the segment average.

Looking Ahead

Sales of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra were up year-over-year as availability issues were put in the rearview. In fact, a backlog of unsold inventory and surplus supply of GM’s full-size trucks for Chevy and GMC in February has started to mount.

On the EV front, production of the Hummer EV Pickup has been hit-and-miss, but GM plans to substantially increase GMC Hummer EV production this year, producing 23,000 examples of the pickup – more than initially planned. GM has roughly 59,000 reservations for the GMC Hummer EV Pickup between the limited-run First Edition model (which sold out shortly after its release) and the series production EV3X, EV2Xand EV2 trim levels.

Going forward, we expect GM full-size truck sales to continue improving through refreshed ICE models and new variants. These models, which are seeing extremely strong demand, are now being built at an additional facility – the GM Oshawa plant in Canada, finally enabling GM to meet demand. Meanwhile, the automaker is slowly adding compelling all-electric models to the mix, which should only grow the automaker’s commanding slice of the sales pie even more.

About Chevy Silverado

The 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 arrives as the fourth model year of the fourth-generation nameplate, introducing a few changes and updates over the refreshed 2022 Silverado. One such change is that 2023 Silverado Duramax models will be equipped with the new 3.0L I6 LZ0 engine turbodiesel “baby Duramax” engine, replacing the 3.0L I6 LM2. Also, the 2023 Silverado 1500 now sees the return of the Brembo Performance Brake Kit. Most recently, the 2023 Silverado RST Crew Cab got a new base engine – namely the 2.7L turbo. Also new for 2023 is the introduction of the even more off-road capable first-ever 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison.

For 2024, the Chevy Silverado 2.7L engine will be called TurboMax. Also, the 2024 Silverado High Country will be available with the Midnight Edition Package, and the 2024 Silverado ZR2 will offer the LZ0 Duramax diesel engine to provide more low-end torque while off-roading, joining the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine for available powerplants. Furthermore, the 2024 Chevy Silverado 6.2L V8 engine will sound meaner thanks to a new dual Active Exhaust system.

Last fall GM unveiled the refreshed 2024 Chevy Silverado HD featuring new exterior styling, an overhauled interior, new tech features, and upgrades to the powertrain lineup. Additionally, the automaker teased the first-ever 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 forthcoming as the flagship off-roader for the Bow Tie brand’s heavy-duty pickup line, which should be revealed any day now.

Under the hood, the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD cradles the 6.6L L8T V8 gasoline engine as standard, while the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine is optional. The diesel engine also boasts an improved, SAE-certified output boost to 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. For 2024, both the diesel engine and the gasoline engine now connect to the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission as standard, which replaces the GM six-speed equipped mated to gasoline-powered models previously.

About GMC Sierra

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 introduces only a handful of changes and updates compared to the refreshed 2022 Sierra 1500. One of those includes availability of a new Graphite Edition package on the base Sierra Pro. Also, the 2023 Sierra 1500 now sees the return of the Brembo Performance Brake Kit, while white wheel arch moldings are available once again, and removable off-road assist steps are available for the first time.

The big news for 2023 is the debut of the first-ever 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition as the most off-road-capable factory Sierra 1500 ever, developed with input from American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) like the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison and first-ever 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison. Additionally, the “standard” 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X receives new equipment from the AEV Edition.

For 2024, the GMC Sierra 2.7L engine will be called TurboMax. Additionally, the 2024 Sierra AT4X will offer the LZ0 Duramax diesel engine to provide more low-end torque while off-roading, joining the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine as an available powerplant. Much like the 2024 Silverado 1500, the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 6.2L V8 engine will get the Active Exhaust system as well.

Last fall GM also unveiled the refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD debuting fresh exterior styling, a new interior, powertrain updates, and more. The refresh is highlighted by the arrival of the premium 2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate, the pinnacle of heavy-duty trucks. Joining the new range-topping trim level will be the “seriously off-road capable” 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4X as an even-more-capable off-road version of the current GMC Sierra HD AT4.

About GMC Hummer EV Pickup

Production of the 2022 Hummer EV Pickup began when the first Edition 1 model rolled off the assembly line. The all-electric truck is based on GM’s dedicated “Ulti-body” electric GM BT1 platform. A different variant of the same the BT1 architecture is used by the upcoming Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV.

The Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 produces 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of wheel torque, while the Hummer EV SUV Edition 1 develops 830 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of wheel torque. The Watts to Freedom mode pushes the new pickup to 60 mph in just 3 seconds. Both output figures are sourced from GM Ultium battery and GM Ultium Drive motor technologies.

Other standout features for the pickup include adaptive air suspension, Extract Mode, Terrain Mode with one-pedal driving, the revolutionary CrabWalk Mode, UltraVision cameras, and more.

The 2023 Hummer EV Pickup offers a new 3X Launch Package for the EV3X and a new Sport Package for that trim level and the Edition 1, while losing the Sky Convertible Top option.

  1. Man that interior is TITS but the shifter is dumb. Column is where they belong IMHO

    1. The console and floor shifter are pretty cool and sporty for an old man’s truck but not really conducive to work.

      1. The lower end models get the column shifter. Those who are buying a mid to high end truck do not want a tractor style column shifter.

        1. Never wanted a Cluttered up conslole in my denali or LTZ before and they have always come with column shifters guess I’ve been a buget shopper. Wish they gave an option

        2. I do. I have a ’20 SLT Sierra currently, and will likely be purchasing a refreshed High Country – if and when – GM either accepts my order, or one close enough in configuration (LZ0, Super Cruise, either Pearl White or Red Tintcoat) comes available in local inventory. I would 100% prefer to have the column shifter over the electric console shifter in my highly-optioned truck.

          1. I have a Sierra Denali and I DO NOT want a column shifter. Love this truck… do not want tractor technology.

  2. Not surprised, the new GM trucks look great and have a good variety of power trains available. Here in my red Midwest state they fly off the lots as soon as they arrive. There’s still no inventory to choose from. But of course Mary doesn’t realize this so she shuts down Silverado production. Pretty dumb move.

  3. I drove Fords from 1979 -2012, except for an S-10 in the early 80’s. I bought my first new Silverado in 2012 and will never go back to F Series again. However, I might buy a Bronco since GM stupidly refuses to compete with it and the Jeep Wrangler.

  4. And yet they still can’t seem to get the 2023 Colorado’s to dealerships!?!?!?!

  5. Funny how Toyota and Nissan keeps it’s fingers in the pie considering sales of their full size trucks hardly make a ripple in total full size sales. I guess when you want it all you want it all.

  6. Are all the ZR2s still from Mexico?

    1. Yes. ZR2, AT4X, and refreshed Custom/LT Trail Boss are all produced at Silao. Regular AT4s are still coming out of Ft. Wayne though.

  7. Long term commitment even with lower sales. Something US manufacturers don’t give a rats ass about.
