Chevy Malibu Inventory Shrunk Supply In March 2023

Inventory levels of the Chevy Malibu across the U.S. dropped sharply in the beginning of March 2023, GM Authority sources familiar with the matter tell us.

4,941 units of the Chevy Malibu were on the ground at dealerships as of early March, with an additional 963 examples of the midsize sedan on their way to dealers across the U.S. These figures are down significantly as compared to February 2023 numbers. This gives the Malibu a 36 days supply, meaning there is sufficient Malibu inventory for 36 days at the current sales pace. For context, a 60 days supply was considered normal prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s worth noting that the Malibu RS is the fastest-turning trim level.

2020 Chevy Malibu.

As a reminder, the Chevy Malibu is the Bow Tie brand’s third best-selling nameplate in the U.S., coming in behind the Chevy Silverado and Chevy Equinox in first and second, respectively. In fact, during the 2022 calendar year, Malibu sales rose almost 200 percent to 115,467 units, which outpaced Chevy’s overall average growth rate of six percent for the year.

With that in mind, it may come as no surprise that General Motors is currently planning to release another generation of the sedan, despite the push towards crossovers and all-electric vehicles.

As far as the current 2023 Malibu is concerned, there is only a single drivetrain configuration on offer. This includes the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LFV gasoline engine, rated at 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission. Previously, the Malibu lineup featured an additional engine option, the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG, rated at 250 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, matched to the GM nine-speed automatic transmission. Unfortunately, that powertrain combination was dropped as the Premier trim level was replaced with the 2LT.

Under the skin, the 2023 Malibu rides on the GM E2 platform, while production began back on September 7th, 2022 at the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City. The upcoming 2024 Malibu is set to kick off production at the same facility late June 2023.

  1. If the Malibu sales are that good, why did GM stop producing other sedans such as the Impala? And GM must consider an electric sedan now or else the imports take over that market by 2030.

    1. They’re only good because of the heavy discounts. Dealer near me has them starting mid $19k.

  2. If something happens to our Impala, I would look at the Malibu except for the puny power plant.

    1. Unless you need more than “normal” power (carrying more than 500 pounds) the cvt/1.5l does very well, it will get right on up to 75-80, and is sleek bodied enough to cruise a little higher.. but at 65-70 35-37 mpg is sure nice

  3. Knock on wood our 2017 Malibu has had no issues other then the shift to park light that comes on once in a while. Fuel economy and performance are still as good as the day we bought it.

  4. Gee, could it be because that is the closest buyers can get to a reasonable size sedan? I’ll bet former Impala drivers were putting off a new purchase as long as practical.

  5. It goes to show the bean counters don’t know what they’re doing.

  6. Strange that the RS is reported as the fastest turning trim level when 90% of the Malibus on dealer lots and on the road and rental lots are LT’s in my neck of the wood in Upstate, NY. I know that doesn’t mean much but I’m curious where all these RS versions are selling.
