Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Camaro sales kept the Bow Tie’s muscle car in third place to start the year during Q1 2023. The Ford Mustang (see running Mustang sales numbers) took the checkered flag with a five percent bump to 14,711 units, followed by the Dodge Challenger in second place with a two percent uptick to 11,371 units. The Camaro took up the rear with a segment-best 16 percent increase to 7,780 units.

Sales Numbers - Two-Door Muscle Cars - Q1 2023 - USA

CHEVROLET CAMARO +15.95% 7,780 6,710 23% 21%
TOTAL +6.42% 33,862 31,820

From a segment share standpoint, the Camaro held a 23 percent share, up two percentage points – the only model to post a gain. The Mustang held a 43 percent segment share, down one percentage point, while the Challenger posted 34 percent share, also down one percentage point.

The two-door muscle car segment grew six percent to 33,862 units during Q1 2023, meaning Camaro sales outperformed the segment average.

For reference, we provide sales results for the expanded mainstream two-door sports car segment below.

Sales Numbers - Mainstream Two-Door Sports Cars - Q1 2023 - USA

MODEL Q1 23 / Q1 22 Q1 23 Q1 22 Q1 23 SHARE Q1 22 SHARE

SUBARU BRZ +1.44% 985 971 2% 3%
TOTAL +4.84% 39,475 37,653

While the Camaro remained in third place in this expanded segment with a 20 percent share, up two percentage points, it still moved over 2K more units than the remaining three competitors combined.

The mainstream two-door sports car segment grew five percent to 39,475 units during Q1 2023, meaning Camaro sales outperformed the segment average in this expanded segment.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Camaro sales started the year with a 16 percent bump and a 23 percent segment share during the first quarter of 2023 to take third place when competing against other two-door muscle car rivals, the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger. The sixth-gen Camaro remained in third in the mainstream two-door sports car segment, but beat out additional competitors like the Toyota 86, Mazda MX-5 Miata, and Subaru BRZ. This shortness of this expanded list shows just how limited the two-door car market has become.

About Chevy Camaro

The 2023 Chevy Camaro arrives as the eighth model year of the current sixth generation, introducing several important changes compared to the 2022 model, including the introduction of a few new exterior colors and the deletion of various optional equipment. The 2023 model year also sees the deletion of the optional 1LE Spec Visible Carbon Fiber Spoiler and optional Sport Pedals Kit. The 2023 Camaro also adds two new 20-inch wheel options and, now, a total of 13 rear spoilers to satisfy nearly every customer.

In March, GM announced that the 2024 model year will be the last for the sixth-gen Camaro, with a 2024 Chevy Camaro Collector’s Edition celebrating the outgoing model. GM also indirectly confirmed that a next-generation Chevy Camaro is coming, though it will likely be very different compared to the current model.

  2. Sales of the Camaro will only improve now that the word is out that GM will soon be exiting the muscle car segment. Get’em while you can.

  3. Last year, could not locate an LT-1 lease(during GMs
$289/month deal) within 500 miles of home.
So , I’ve decided instead to order to purchase. LT-1 convertible, 6spd, dual mode, Recaros. Approached 8 dealerships ; including one out of state. All but one said ” no V-8 allocation” ; one said they have allocation for only one 2SS. Can’t order an LT-1 instead. Hmm. Been working on this since early Feb.
    What say you, GM ?

    1. The reason is the design team made it so dang ugly in the last model years. They took a good looking car and turned it into a utter cluttered mess. Also before I get down votes, don’t forget I’m a proud camaro owner as well. 2010 rs.

  4. I am currently looking to purchase a SS 1LE. I live in the Bay Area (California) and there are like 26 within a 1000 mile radius. 13 in a 500 mile radius. I believe I can only buy one from California because of the copper free breaks. All have at least a $2500.00 mark up. A black one at Dublin Chevrolet is $5,000.00 markup, even though I bought a $60k Silverado with cash just last March. The salesman kept trying to tell me that this was the last year of the Camaro, but I tried to educate him and told him it’s over in 2024. Even the SS Camaro’s have markups. If GM produced more SS Camaro’s and some how made the dealerships sell for sticker, the Camaro would be first in sales every quarter. Anyone who pays a mark up needs a swift kick in the pants.

  5. Didn’t realize the 2-door sports car segment was so small.

Bolt EV sales crushed all of these for Q1, comparatively.

Maybe make it an EV and they can get sales up.

  6. Did not really expect anything different. With the end of the Camaro near. GM is making an error in this regard, but i don’t believe GM as the American people’s best interest at heart. GM as moved it’s loyalty to china .

  7. I’m sure GM will do exactly the opposite of most fans want and make an ugly bloated CUV EV like Ford did, stick the word Camaro on it and call it a day! At least Ford had the common sense to keep the traditional 2 door pony coupe in ICE form alive a while longer.
