Brace Yourself, GM Pre-Announces Corvette ZR2 Shooting Brake

GM just pre-announced a fresh addition to the C8 Chevy Corvette lineup, showing off several images of the all-new Corvette ZR2 Shooting Brake.

“The eighth-generation Corvette re-wrote the rulebook as the first mid-engine production sports car in Corvette history,” said Chevrolet VP Kjell Gong. “The Corvette ZR2 Shooting Brake continues to break new ground as the most practical, off-road-capable model to ever wear the iconic crossed flags emblem.”

A rendering of the Chevy Corvette ZR2 Shooting Brake.

While C8 Corvette fans will no doubt recognize the front-end styling and a few other select body panels, the new Corvette ZR2 Shooting Brake stands in contrast to the rest of the C8 lineup thanks to a long list of unique features and content. Let’s start from the top, where the Corvette ZR2 Shooting Brake incorporates an extended roofline that stretches back into the rear end to offer expanded cabin space and a considerable amount of rear cargo room, with upwards of 15 square feet of room available. The new body style also affords a modest rear seat for an extra passenger, which can also fold down to expand rear cargo room up to 25 square feet.

To this end, the C8 Corvette Stingray’s naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT2 gasoline engine was relocated, returning the Corvette to a front-mounted powerplant layout in order to maximize the practical aspects of the new Corvette ZR2 Shooting Brake. Output was tweaked to match the new model’s off-road-oriented demeanor, with torque boosted to 500 pound-feet for greater prowess in the rough stuff. Four-wheel drive, beadlock-capable wheels, and a set of chunky Mud-Terrain tires put it all the power down.

The suspension was upgraded as well, with the Corvette team taking inspiration from the Air Ride Adaptive Suspension technology onboard the GMC Hummer EV, offering customers extra ride height on demand. The standard C8 brakes were downsized to fit the new off-road running gear.

“The introduction of the C8 Corvette for the 2020 model year was met with incredible enthusiasm from fans and critics,” Gong said. “The all-new Corvette ZR2 Shooting Brake will no doubt continue that momentum into a new segment where Corvette once again aims to not only compete, but win.”

Did we get you? If so, happy April Fools Day! Stay sharp, we may have a few more jokes lined up for today.

In all seriousness, though, a Corvette utility vehicle is actually not all that removed from reality. As GM Authority covered in the past, the nameplate will expand with the introduction of a new Corvette electric crossover in the next few years, and while it may not look like the Corvette ZR2 Shooting Brake we rendered here, the idea has some legs.

  1. Well if it weren’t dead before… I’m surprised actually that we didn’t see spy photos first, with a thick vinyl skin, or seizure-inducing swirly patterned wrap before they subjected us to the full monty of shame.

    1. The Corvette is remarkable now. They are making a mockery out of it if this comes out. I think the engineers at chevrolet can come up with something better than this ridiculousness. It’s almost like they ran out ideas and are going to make a joke out of the corvette.

    1. Better find one TODAY. This is the only day they will be available.

    2. For GM to survive the shrinking Chinese market (The Generaldown -60% since 2015) Barra needs to consider a Corvette brand.
Cadillac’s reinvention has yet to prove itself, inflation price gouging can’t last forever, Buick US has failed by most metrics & would loose money except for captive Chine imports.
GMC, Hummer, Corvette & trucks are GM’s most reliable premium price points. They will be needed to fund the transition away from ICE & carbon neutral future.
I hate seeing Corvette change from the American working man’s sports car but, when you look at today’s prices, this has already sort of happened. Corvette can compete with Porsche therefore should around the world seperate from Chevy. Current situation is like if Porsche was only available at Skoda dealerships

  5. This would be super, if it were real. The idea of moving the engine back up front, is kool. And 4×4 is even better, I wouldn’t be surprised if some custom builder, takes this idea and runs with it. Nice rendering tho.

  8. Seeing white Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, and Bentley have done by creating an SUV, line and Porsche with an off-road option. Now it would be foolish not to think the core of that would not only do something along this line, but it’s in their best interest to do something along that line.

  9. I could see it being pretty quick and a blast off road. The names another story.

    1. As soon as this “Shooting Brake” hits a boulder off road, it will require a whole new suspension nad probably brand new wheels, since the existing wheels will probably crack beyond repair, just the ones on the Corvette C7. I don’t think I will ever buy another Corvette at this point.

      1. I doubt you were smart enough to buy one in the first place. After all, you bought this April Fools joke and get yourself all upset about it. That’s hilarious.

  16. Yeah you got me. Just always thought of my Corvettes as pavement pounding sport cars because that’s what they do best. GM has never had a real offroad vehicle that’s why I always had a Jeep but certainly like the new Bronco badlands too. Enjoy those sport cars now that spring is here. No joke

  17. A bigger joke would have been if GM announced that basic Stingray coupe production was being ramped up and sold at MSRP.

  18. This could be a rather cool vehicle, just don’t call it a Corvette. YES, i know it’s an April fool’s joke.

Please say it aint so.

  22. This is hideous, the corvette is a sports “CAR” always has been and always should be. Chevrolet can call it what ever they want but leave the corvette name out of it.

Remember when you could order any truck with almost any option, no matter the model you selected? It wasn’t really that long ago. Bring back the order book!
