2025 Volkswagen ID.7 Debuts As Future GM EV Sedan Rival

Volkswagen just unveiled the 2025 Volkswagen ID.7, showing off the very first all-electric VW model for the upper midsize sedan segment. Although GM does not currently have a direct competitor for the 2025 Volkswagen ID.7, The General will eventually launch several new all-electric sedan models under the Chevy and Cadillac brands. As such, the 2025 Volkswagen ID.7 will eventually be rivaled by a new, forthcoming midsize GM EV sedan.

The exterior of the 2025 Volkswagen ID.7 focuses primarily on aerodynamic optimization for enhanced efficiency and longer range. VW says the four-door has a very slippery drag coefficient of 0.23.

The interior of the 2025 Volkswagen ID.7 features a new display and operating concept, and includes a 15-inch infotainment screen, augmented reality head-up display, and backlit touch sliders, as well as a new air-conditioning operating concept integrated in the infotainment system. The sedan offers Climatronic seats with massage function, plus a panoramic sunroof with smart glass opacity. There is also a suite of level two driver assist features offered, including Park Assist Pro with Memory Function.

As for the powertrain, 2025 Volkswagen ID.7 is equipped as standard with a single-motor, rear-wheel drive setup producing 282 horsepower, powered by a standard 77 kWh battery pack. A larger 86 kWh pack will be optional in other markets. Range-per-charge will obviously depend on the battery size, but the sedan is expected to return as much as 435 miles based on the European WLTP cycle, or roughly 350 miles yes converted to the EPA cycle. Official EPA range estimates are not currently available. The powertrain also includes DC fast charging capabilities up to 200 kW where possible.

The Volkswagen ID.7 will launch this fall in Europe and China, with a launch in North America set to follow sometime in the 2024 calendar year. Pricing information will be available at a later date. Production will take place in Germany. Looking ahead, Volkswagen will exclusively produce electric vehicles in Europe from 2033 onwards.

  1. I like the outside and would buy one based on that. I’m really glad that they are offering an EV sedan and truly believe that others will follow. I’m encouraged from the article where it says sedan models from the Chevy and Cadillac brands.

But back to this ID.7, it would be a no go from the interior. That screen is just way too much.

    1. A large screen is necessary for EVs due to the limited availability and general obscurity of chargers, but car makers could work better at incorporating the screens into the vehicle. With curved and folding designs readily accessible, there’s no reason to have big, flat screens that go above the dash. I like how the Ferrari Roma did it with the passenger having their own screen.

      1. Richard P: I have an EV and it is not necessary for the EV’s to have some huge tablet stuck on top of the dash. I don’t even fully understand that part of what you said. But I certainly agree that they all need to do a better job of incorporating the screens. Although I’m not crazy about the outside of my Bolt, I feel the interior is outstanding.

        1. The Bolt’s screen is relatively large at 10.2”. Most ICE vehicles still only offer a meager 8” screen. The reason EV makers install larger screens is for road trips. Unless you already know where the charging stations are at, you will greatly benefit from having a screen that will intelligently map out all of the chargers to minimize how many times you charge. Ideally this can be done all from the car’s navigation system and you don’t have to whip out your phone and squint to find the nearest charger. I agree that the screen doesn’t have to be above the dash. It can be mounted into the car’s console as the Bolt does it.

  2. Like most current VW BEV iterations this has pretty bland styling, but with a more Tesla-esque interior. Its still based off of their already outdated, heavy MEB platform with sh!t software, but improved motors. Expect it to weigh in excess of 4,000 lbs and cost about $45k; more for dual motors. It will compete against the Model 3, Polestar, and EV6. Not many sedans available these days, we’ll see if this appeals to the SUV-loving masses.

    1. At 46k it still looks like a winner for sedan lovers and judging by Model 3 sales, there are plenty of them who would like a larger vehicle.

  3. why 2025 if we are in 2023 ´?

    1. Other markets besides US have more of a mature EV market. And potentially, stricter emissions rules, that mean they need to focus deliveries first to those markets.

  4. I know I keep beating a dead horse but why do Legacy Automakers not offer Frunks except on their Pickup Truck offerings?

Side not….Seems like unfortunately the GM Twins will have the smallest Frunks by far between Ram and Ford.
Not sure if you can fit two Golf bags in the GM Twins like you can easily in the Ford and Ram.
    Huge missed opportunity!!!

  5. ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.6 and now ID.7: they all look alike, with the same plastic layout and a dash where you need to get your eyes off the road for just too long – too bad for pedestrians, cyclists and other traffic participants. It’s unsafe, ugly and just 5 times the same package at different prices and a few inches of length difference. The 350 miles EPA – 200 miles for real – will definitely make people happy: 3 stops more than needed with gasoline. But we keep on believing this represents progress… It’s 1910 all over – we know what technology won from electrics.
