General Motors pulled the sheets on the all-new 2023 Chevy Colorado last July, revealing a third generation for the popular pickup truck. As was the case prior, the 2023 Chevy Colorado is once again available in the off-road-ready ZR2 trim level. Notably, customers can also opt for the optional ZR2 Desert Boss package, which takes the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 to all-new heights in terms of off-road capability and styling. Now, we’re taking a closer look at the visual differences between the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 and ZR2 Desert Boss to see what sets them apart.
Offered as a $9,295 upgrade for the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2, the ZR2 Desert Boss package bundles together a wealth of exterior styling upgrades. They start with a new front fascia treatment, with 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss models equipped with an exclusive front bumper and safari bar (RPO code SD0). The revised front fascia also relocates the fog lights. It should also be noted that the safari bar may interfere or limit the field of view for forward-facing cameras, thus inhibiting the total visibility provided by the HD Surround Vision system.
The running gear is also different, with 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 models equipped with 17-inch aluminum wheels, and ZR2 Desert Boss models equipped with 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels that are exclusive to the Desert Boss package. The wheels offered with the Desert Boss package (RPO code SMY) are not available on non-Desert Boss ZR2 models, but Chevy reps have hinted to GM Authority that this will change, likely with the introduction of the new Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison for the 2024 model year.
Up top, the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss also mounts a 40-inch off-road roof light bar (RPO code S3X), another feature that is exclusive to the package. The Desert Boss also stands out thanks to a bed-mounted sport bar with ZR2 branding in the sail panel (RPO code SBY).
Finally, the styling of the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss is enhanced even further thanks to a number of decals that are applied to the front fender, body side, and tailgate, while the nameplates are finished in black. To note, non-Desert Boss ZR2 models offer black badging as an optional extra.
As a reminder, all 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 models are equipped a standard with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, which is rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque in the High Output variant. Under the skin, you’ll find an updated version of the GMT 31XX platform, while production takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

Why would anybody choose this over a Ranger Raptor? Talk about a $9k package that basically provides aesthetic benefits only. I would caution anybody who seriously is considering this
If you want to buy a Ford, go for it. IMHO, the $9,300 price tag for a brush guard, roll bar (that looks like it came from Pep Boys), different wheels and some stickers is a bag over the head, punch in the face. With this being said, I’d take the standard ZR2 over a Ranger Raptor every day of the week and twice on Sunday. JMHO.
The DSSV’s alone cannot be dealt with. They are simply amazing!
It’s a launch edition that is only here for one year. the little raptor isn’t available. I did not order all that stuff either, so I do agree with you on someone spending 9k extra for that.
Also, bc it’s ford…
ford ranger raptor over a ZR2, NEVER! Fords are infamous for breaking down or recalled.
Where are these vehicles?
Haven’t seen one – just pictures.
I understand they began making them in January, holding them back to jack up the price?
