Bringing a classic Chevy Camaro or Pontiac Firebird up to modern standards of comfort and climate control technology just got a bit easier with Vintage Air’s release of the Gen 5 SureFit Climate-Control System for those nameplates.
The latest Gen 5 SureFit Kit is designed for Chevy Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds from the 1982 through 1992 model years. Vintage Air says the Kit adds a “new higher-capacity blower motor” improving HVAC performance and opening up engine space.
The SureFit Kit is compatible with Camaros and Firebirds that came from the factory with air conditioning. Some modifications to the vehicle’s firewall may be necessary for installation, but Vintage Air made the kit to keep these alterations to a minimum.
The use of modern technology makes the SureFit Climate-Control System more compact than the OEM equipment it replaces, while supplying notably upgraded climate control performance. The kit’s smaller size frees up some space in the engine compartment for other potential modifications or additions.
The SureFit Climate Control System gives modern HVAC performance to classic Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird interiors, surpassing the capabilities of the replaced decades-old A/C systems. Some system features Vintage Air highlights in its description include:
- A 20 percent boost in CFM (cubic feet per minute) of cooled or heated air delivered by the system due to a larger, stronger blower motor
- High-capacity parallel flow heater coil
- Aluminum plate-and-fin cooling coil
- Variable blower fan speed adjustments
- High-volume dehumidifying defrost
- Fully electronic microprocessor control system, free of cables or vacuum tubes
Overall, the SureFit Climate Control System makes heating and cooling the interior of a classic Chevy Camaro or Pontiac Firebird more efficient, more precisely adjustable, faster, and more effective through use of modern technology.
Vintage Air uses high-quality materials and processes to produce the SureFit Climate Control System, offering OEM levels of quality and fit. The system is housed in an injection-molded case with rubber over-molded blend air doors. The actuator motors develop higher torque than the factory originals and the expansion valves are block-type.
The control panel supplied with the SureFit Kit is designed to preserve the factory control appearance, while including LED backlighting. All parts needed for installation are included in the kit. A standard three-year warranty covers the Vintage Air Climate Control System, which is additionally U.S.-made.
In September 2022 Vintage Air also has announced a new range of air conditioning systems for GM G-Body models, including the 1982 to 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass, as well as the 1986 to 1987 Buick Grand National and Buick Regal.

If your system is still good and you can get the good Freon don’t change it. The old Freon works so much better. They had to pump up this system to make it feel cold enough as the new Freons today are no where as efficient.
My 85 is still on the hood stuff and boy is it cold.
My 92 RS kept the interior cool just fine. The 305 was another story…
Vintage air should have made the control panel look exactly like the original to preserve the look of the stock interior.
It is nice that a company is making this for cars this age. Vintage air should be commended for this.
I avoided restoration ptojects of these model years for reasons like .
Fantastic that now I could retore an early 80’s and have HVAC.
Now if they would just stop the requirement for passing smog checks
in California… it would be even easier to keep these 40 year old classics running.
Need a new system for 88 94 S10s and Blazer’s
It’s kind sad to do all this work creating this article, but not knowing these are 3rd gen years, not 5th generation.
Shows lack of true knowledge, instead this comes off as sales presentation for vintage air.
Too much to change to call a simple conversation.
Reality is the R12 is a much safer alternative to the R34, and not that much efficient if at all.
It’s also cooler to have the look, and functional OEM than a resto rod.
Unless your dropping in a stroker, or adding turbo, etc.
Looking at the vintage air website, the Gen 5 is is for their 5th generation of the Vintage Air SureFit kits, not a reference to the third gen f-body.
