Road courses produce some of the most intense races on the Cup Series circuit, and much like short tracks, it’s not uncommon for friend and foe alike to have run-ins on track. That was certainly the case at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) on March 27th, 2023, as several NASCAR Chevy teams battled.
It started, quite literally, on the first lap, when Ty Dillon’s No. 43 Camaro ZL1 and Jimmie Johnson’s No. 84 Camaro made contact and took each other out of competition. Neither driver was able to complete a single lap, and finished 38th and 39th, respectively.
Then, at the end of the race, several more NASCAR Chevy teams got into each other once again, leaving Daniel Suárez, driver of the No. 99 Camaro, upset with his teammate Ross Chastain in the No. 1 Camaro and Alex Bowman in the No. 48 Camaro. Suárez and the No. 99 Camaro sped up after the race to show displeasure with the No. 48 Camaro of Bowman and the No. 1 Camaro of Chastain, striking both race cars and even confronting Chastain in person once they’d exited their cars.
Suárez’s hotheadedness was the result of a multicar incident on a NASCAR Overtime restart, during which Chastain’s No. 1 Camaro contacted the No. 48 Camaro of Bowman. Bowman then spun into Suárez’s No. 99 Camaro, taking out the No. 19 Toyota TRD Camry of Martin Truex Jr. in the process. All involved cars were racing near the front of the field, but were relegated to mediocre finishes after the wreck.
Meanwhile, the No. 24 NASCAR Chevy of William Byron and the No. 8 Camaro of Kyle Busch tried to hunt down the eventual winner, Tyler Reddick, in the No. 45 Camry, but couldn’t make it stick. Kimi Räikkönen’s No. 91 Camaro finished 29th after an incident, while Jordan Taylor, subbing in the No. 9 Camaro for Chase Elliott, crossed the line in 24th.
