Michelin was the top-ranked OE tire manufacturer in the latest J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Study.
The study examines tire owner satisfaction in four main areas, including tire ride, tire wear, tire traction and handling, and tire appearance. Four vehicle segments were examined, including luxury vehicles, passenger cars, performance sport, and truck / utility vehicles. To note, tires in the performance sport segment are ineligible for an award due to an insufficient number of brands ranked.
This year’s study was based on the responses of 32,151 owners of 2021 and 2022 model-year vehicles, with the study fielded between August and December of the 2022 calendar year.
According to a recent J.D. Power report, overall owner satisfaction was up to 799 points, an increase of 5 points compared to the results from last year’s study. Satisfaction with gas-powered-vehicle OE tires was the primary driver of the increase, although the report also indicates that satisfaction with EV OE tires increased a substantial 62 points compared to the 2022 study. Rankings are based on a 1,000-point scale, with higher scores indicating greater overall satisfaction.
Michelin was the highest-ranked brand in both the luxury segment and the truck / utility segment, scoring 833 points in the luxury segment, and 809 points in the truck/utility segment. Meanwhile, Pirelli was the highest-ranked brand in the passenger car segment, scoring 828 points.
Michelin’s top-ranked performance in the luxury segment is the brand’s 20th consecutive year at the top of the list, with Goodyear following in second place with 818 points and Bridgestone ranked third with 810 points. The segment average was set at 813 points.
Pirelli’s top rank in the passenger car segment hands the brand its second consecutive first-place finish in-segment, with Michelin coming in at a close second with 827 points and BFGoodrich in third with 825 points. The segment average was 801 points.
Finally, Michelin’s top performance in the truck / utility segment was followed by Bridgestone in second with 801 points and Continental in third with 798 points. The segment average was 788 points.

About 10 years ago or so, my nephew who was a tech for an Audi store told me about mounting a set of tires. It was a new set of Michelin’s on a 3 year old Audi and he said that Audi rims were normally very high quality and in round most of the time. He said that the tires were usually the culprit for needing to be balanced. When he mounted those new Michelin’s on the Audi rims and went to balance them, he said every one was near perfect without adding weights. I still find this hard to believe, but he swore on it and always told me to buy Michelin’s. Well, I’m too cheap to buy them and so I would buy what I liked that was in my budget. Now here I am today with two of my three cars running Michelin’s. My 2023 Bolt has them as OEM and so far I love them. The old 1986 Cadillac I just picked up had a brand new set of them (but blackwalls) and an older Cadillac with wire wheel covers needs WW tires. I happened to have a set of almost brand new WW (Nexen) tires the same size that were on my 1988 Cimarron. So I swapped out the tires and put my nice WW’s on the Seville and the new Michelin’s on the Cimarron. I do like the Nexen’s, but I’ll probably never buy anything but the Michelin’s from now on.
My Equinox Premier came from the factory with Michelin tires. I must say that I am not impressed. It just hit 30k miles and my wife asked me last week when I planned on replacing them. The tread is over have gone (they have been regularly rotated) and they are worthless in the snow and sing on dry highway concrete. However, they are good in rain so I will wait until Fall to replace them with a tire with better grip. My only other experience with Michelin tires was pair I had on the front of a Ford truck 20 years ago, those were good tires that wore very well and lasted many miles. I would buy those again but not the new ones I have now.
There is a TSB out for the 2018 – 2020 Equinox with factory Michelins and tire wear with factory RPO of either 5CX or RUB. It is Bulletin No. 19-NA-078. I had already replaced mine (wore out in 31K) before this came out. It may help. This TSB also covers Buick Envision, Cadillac XT5, and GMC Acadia and Terrain.
I put 90,000 miles on the original Michelin’s that came on my new 2015 Encore. I stopped by the tire dealer who kept me patched up because nails love me, and asked how many more miles can I get out of these? 15,000 he said. I traded the car later that week. The Contenintals on the 2019 Encore have 67,000 and still look great. Moral of my story: Rotate every 5,000 miles.
My 2019 equinox premier, the Michelin tires were toast at 29000 miles. I but coopers from this point on. I contacted Michelin and crickets
Sounds just like the ones I have, not your father’s Michelins! Will replace with something else.
