The GM Authority Take

GMC Terrain sales performed well during the fourth quarter of 2022 despite various production-related constraints in the past that have mostly been remedied, with over four times more deliveries than the previous quarter.

In fact, GMC inventory overall has climbed from more than a 60 days supply in November 2022 to more than a 70 days supply in December 2022. For reference, a 60-day supply was considered optimal in the U.S. auto industry prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. A 60 day inventory level means that dealerships have enough inventory on-site to sustain current sales volume for roughly the next 60 days.

We expect Terrain sales to continue at their current levels while also growing, as long as GM can keep up with supply.

About GMC Terrain

The 2023 GMC Terrain arrives as the sixth model year of the latest second-gen Terrain. It introduces a few critical changes and updates as compared to the fully refreshed 2022 GMC Terrain, which debuted updated looks, several new features, the new Terrain AT4 as well as a new off-road-flavored trim that is offered exclusively with AWD.

One of the updates for 2023 is a new powerplant, namely the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine, which is rated at 175 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. The new turbocharged engine will replace the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX gasoline engine previously equipped on the 2022 Terrain. Notably, output is similar between the two boosted four-cylinder engines, with the LYX rated at 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. The 2023 Terrain will continue utilizing the GM 9-speed automatic transmission for cog swaps, the same transmission configuration used by the 2022 model.

The 2023 Terrain is also equipped with an electro-hydraulic braking system, meaning GMC’s crossover will follow in the footsteps of another small crossover in the GM vehicle portfolio – the Cadillac XT4, which has featured e-assist brakes since its launch. Cadillac says this system can result in enhanced fuel economy and takes up less space under the vehicle’s hood, replacing the traditional vacuum-assisted brake setup.

On a related note, GM is asking its dealerships to increase sales of GMC Terrain Denali units equipped with the Black Diamond Edition package up to 40 percent of overall Denali mix. The package, which is only available on the Denali trim level, brings a bevy of features for the exterior and interior.

Production for the 2023 GMC Terrain commenced at the GM San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico on August 22nd, 2022. The online configurator tool is live for the 2023 Terrain.

During the recent GM Investor Day event held November 17th, GM President Mark Reuss provided a few interesting insights with regard to the upcoming next-gen GMC Terrain. He stated that, like the Chevy Equinox, the GMC Terrain competed “in the largest segment in the world,” and that the next-gen model would receive “sort of the GMC Professional Grade upgrade.”

“I gotta tell you, it’s one of the most beautiful SUVs in that segment” Reuss said. “Again, very GMC, very truck, very Professional Grade, so a big interior and exterior enhancement for the Terrain.”

The upcoming next-gen GMC Terrain will debut during the 2024 calendar year for the 2025 model year, sharing a carry-over platform with the next-gen Chevy Equinox, but updated for both.

Production of the 2024 GMC Terrain will begin in May and is scheduled to end in October 2024 to make way for the upcoming fourth-generation model.

Sales continue to climb for the Terrain, and a next-gen model with big upgrades can only help boost that trend even more.

  1. I would consider the new Terrain but it needs a bit more HP and Torque to be competitive, I have the prev gen Terrain with Ecotec and will not buy another underpowered SUV.
