Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Sierra sales kept Big Red’s full-size truck range in fourth place in its segment when ranked by sales volume in the full-size mainstream pickup truck segment during the fourth quarter of 2022. The Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-series sales) remained at the top with a two percent sales drop to 186,650 units, while the Chevy Silverado (see running Chevy Silverado sales), the Sierra’s corporate cousin, followed in second with a 23 percent bump to 141,912 units. The Ram Pickup slipped to third with a 22 percent slide to 105,255 units. The GMC Sierra remained in fourth with a 25 percent bump to 72,415 units. The Toyota Tundra followed in fifth with a 75 percent jump to 29,727 units.

Starting with this quarter, we’ve added a couple of EV entries, the GMC Hummer EV Pickup and Rivian R1T all-electric pickup, to compliment the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning, sales of which are already combined with those of Ford’s ICE models. The Rivian actually outsold the Nissan Titan, moving 3,900 units to take sixth place, while the Titan placed seventh with a 44 percent drop in sales to 2,576 units. While the Titan received a slight refresh for the 2020 model year, it will not be redesigned at the end of the current generation’s lifecycle, around 2025. Meanwhile, the next-generation 2022 Toyota Tundra started hitting dealer lots in late 2021, and seems to be gaining some traction, though not enough to make a dent. If nothing else, the Tundra appears to be taking sales from the nearly-deceased Titan. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup filled out the list with just 72 deliveries.

  • Rivian R1T sales represent estimates, not actual deliveries.

From a segment share standpoint, the Sierra posted a 13 percent share, up two percentage points. The F-Series posted a 34 percent segment share, down three percentage points year-over-year, followed by the Silverado with a 26 percent share, up four percentage points. The Ram Pickup held a 19 percent share, down a segment-worst seven percentage points. The Tundra posted a five percent share, up two percentage points, and the Rivian held a one percent share. Shares of the Titan and Hummer EV Pickup were both nil.

Combining the GMC Sierra and Hummer EV Pickup along with the Chevy Silverado gave GM a segment-leading share of 39 percent with 214,399 deliveries, making The General once again the best-selling manufacturer of full-size pickups in America.

Overall, the full-size pickup segment grew four percent to 542,507 units, meaning that GMC Sierra sales slightly outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

The healthy growth in GMC Sierra sales demonstrates that Big Red’s bread-and-butter offering is very much in demand. When combining sales of the Sierra with those of the Chevy Silverado, The General regained the crown for overall full-size pickup truck sales in the U.S. Better yet, the Professional Grade brand continues to improve its offerings in order to boost the bottom line for GM’s money makers.

2023 Sierra 1500 AT4X and AEV Edition

About GMC Sierra

In late 2021, GM revealed the refreshed the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 – technically for the 2022.5 model year – that addressed many criticisms of the pre-refresh model with new exterior styling, a completely overhauled cabin, powertrain improvements, and the addition of the range-topping Sierra Denali Ultimate and the all-new Sierra AT4X off-roader. The Sierra Denali Ultimate is GMC’s most luxurious pickup yet, while the Sierra AT4X is (mostly) GMC’s equivalent to the new Silverado ZR2.

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 introduces only a handful of changes and updates compared to the full model refresh introduced for the 2022 model year. One of those includes the addition of a new Graphite Edition package on the base Sierra Pro trim. The big news for 2023, however, is the first-ever 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition, which pushes the capability of the new go-anywhere AT4X trim level to new heights. As the most off-road capable factory Sierra 1500 ever, it was developed with input from American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) like the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison and first-ever 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison. Also new for the 2023 model years is that the “regular” 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X receives new equipment from the AEV Edition.

Production of the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 is set to kick off on July 17th, bringing a few important changes to the vehicle, which we will detail at a later date.

2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate

Meanwhile, heavy duty truck customers got their first look at the refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD, which brings fresh exterior styling, a new interior, a revised trim level lineup, powertrain updates, and more. The refresh is highlighted by the arrival of the premium 2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate and “seriously off-road capable” 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4X.

The Sierra HD Denali Ultimate trim level aims to be the pinnacle of heavy-duty trucks, characterized by Vader chrome exterior bits, 20-inch Ultra-bright wheels, and an Alpine Umber interior. Additionally, the 2024 Sierra HD gets a new Denali Reserve Package, which replaces the Denali Ultimate Package offered on the 2023 model, since Denali Ultimate is now a fresh standalone trim level for 2024 that includes all of the Denali Reserve Package content as standard.

Production of the refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD started this past December.

2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate

After the GMC Hummer EV Pickup and GMC Hummer EV SUV, the Professional Grade brand debuted its third fully electric truck last October – the GMC Sierra EV Denali. Debuting in Denali Edition 1, AT4, and Elevation trims, the new electric truck shares it platform with the Silverado EV, but features a unique exterior and interior. It also gets a fixed panoramic glass roof, and front-end lighting animation. Just like the two GMC Hummer EV models, the all-electric Sierra rides on GM’s BT1 platform while making use of GM’s Ultium battery system and Ultium Drive motors.

2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup

In February our spies got a first look at a 2024 GMC Sierra EV prototype example out and about on public roads. This particular model appears to be a Sierra EV Denali Edition 1, which is the only variant billed for the 2024 model year. All other variants, including “regular” Denali, AT4, and Elevation, will be offered for the 2025 model year.

With the introduction of refreshed GMC Sierra 1500 and Sierra HD models featuring expanded lineups, and the first-ever all-electric GMC Sierra EV complemented by the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, we expect Sierra sales to undoubtedly continue to grow over time for GM’s premium full-size pickup truck lineup. This is especially true as GMC ups its game with industry leading variants like the ultra-luxurious Denali Ultimate and highly off-road capable AT4X, including the special edition from AEV.

  1. Meanwhile sales for anything newer and more expensive goes down due to high interest rates and “Supply Shortages”.
